too much rain
« on: June 14, 2010, 07:27:35 AM »
starting to worry about our hatch in ohio and from what i see all across the central and midwest states. we were fairly dry until late may and the hens were starting to disappear all going to nest. then this torrential rain started and the hens started to show up again as nest and poults were destroyed. yesterday i saw one hen with poults in a hay field so i do not know how many. 50 yards away was a gobbler with two hens probably a late or second breeding. then down the road six hens with no poults. my wife saw three hens no poults at the same time below the house. this is not good. i know i've seen strutting toms with hens on the forth of july but i was hoping this would not be another year like that. i guess the only good thing about the rain is that no hay has been taken off in ohio which should save some nests. not good for the farmer but maybe a little help for the turkey.
what are you guys seeing? sooner

I think you are right Marlin. The cool weather we had persisted and then met up with heavy rains . The ground has never dried up yet, leaving very moist conditions in the fields. We have not been able to cut our hay yet and now heavy rains are beating the hay down flat. I also fear that this is going to be a very poor hatch this year. I have seen numerous hens feeding alone recently and the gobblers on my KY. hunting are are still out strutting daily, trying to attract hens. I assume that there is still some second chance breeding going on. This is not the hatching weather we need, for sure !

Marlin same here in MO...  we thought for sure it was going to be a great season.  Then boom the sky fell :(  I am hearing some good news... some counties are doing great!  I think the hay staying in the fields longer is definitely helping out!

I sure wish MO could have a good hatch for 2 years in a row.... we'd be back in business for sure!

Went on a ride here in S.C. to clear my head and try and see some poults. First hen I saw had nine poults that were all of four inches tall. They were actually tripping over gravel as they crossed a dirt road. Several miles later came across two hens that had over a dozen poults with them that were a good bit larger than quail. We have been without a good rain here in my part of S.C. for a good while but the heat index the past four days has been between 102-112 degrees.

I have seen very few hens with poults in Michigan. I definitely feel that all the thunderstorms impacted our nesting success!

Reading where the Georgia and Alabama hatches this year were good according to sighting reports.

i have not seen a poult for two weeks but i have not seen a hen either which is a good thing. others are telling me their seeing plenty of poults but most are small which means we had a late hatch and an early hatch with nothing in between. if things go well i'll be done planting food plots this week and will have more time to spend scouting. by sept. 1 i'll be spending a lot of time with the new puppy in the woods. right now she is just being a puppy.

i was worried i would not have any poults to train the new pup on but as always they are now coming out of the woodwork. just this last four days i have seen several hens with good numbers of poults. we lost most of our june hatch but late may and july must have been great. these poults are everywhere from a week old to almost full size. i know someone in our crowd is going to pull the hammer on a four pound poult this fall. it happens every time we have a big late hatch like this. of course we offer no mercy on the pore soul after the crime has been commited.
