squirrel hunting
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:37:12 AM »
Squirrel hunting is NOW more about keeping up with where the birds are , what thier doing , where their feeding , loafing , and roostin'. Yesterday was my first time out this year . Seen birds , heard birds . Recorded and areas noted in the journal for later use.

I haven't went squirrel hunting in a long long time... might have to do that today!

Every time I do get out in the woods, I use it for scouting as much as hunting!

I need to get some fresh squirrel and have a good meal!

We entered the woods in the low light before sunup . Squirrels were active everywhere as we made our way quietly down a two-track through the cedar and hardwood mix. My fiends son got several shots on his first time squirrel hunting . But it has been my experience that youngsters need to get more woods experience in order to become proficient at making head shots with a 22, regardless how well they shoot at the range . At any rate we had a good time and they took home 2 grays.

More important to me was that I located another gang of turkeys this morning. They didn't make too much racket and I'd rather not GUESS as to whether they were jakes, toms, or a brood and hens . Nevertheless they are there in that corner of the hunting area . I did see a hen in this same general area a few weeks back .

Time is drawing near and the mornings are feeling more like fall each day . Tomorrow I'll hit a different part of the public land to scout and squirrel hunt.

In the woods at first light. 2 greys died before sunup. Jakes were crankin' it up off to my west . 3 more greys gave up the ghost . The jakes made their fly down announcement and went silent.
4 out of 5 headshots on the greys,,,from 15 to 50 yards . The last two were shot in the exact same spot on the tree . The first was heading down the tree and I let out a lip squeak that stopped him . Hit him right between the ears .He hung there on the side of the tree for 20 - 30 seconds before dropping . His littermate was barking up a storm . I stood my ground and waited . The mate kept moving from limb to limb and ended up in the same exact spot and position as the first one. I lip squeaked again and when I looked through the scope I could see it was sniffing where its brother had been .
