Chestnut...a Love/Hate Relationship
« on: August 27, 2013, 06:32:20 PM »
Well guys I have to say it feels mighty fine to be posting a call...it's been a while and even better to have spent a little time in the shop as of late.  Many of you know my life has been totally consumed by work for about 7-8 weeks now, but it is starting to soften up and I scooped some quality time in the shop last weekend.  That is the good part...the frustrating part is working with American Chestnut.  As some of know all too well, you have have some pieces that by appearances look ideal for a great sounding call...that is until you open it up. *aah*  Fortunately, when ever I do build with Chestnut I always build 2 of them and such is the case I needed  both of them this time.

This is Walnut over A Chestnut with a little quiet deserted Farmstead, perhaps what you might find in the midwest or the south.  The customer loves the tail feathers and HATE AS I DO to burn on Chestnut...we got her done!  Thanks for looking.

Bill, the grain is this wood is super tight and rarely gets over 1/16" as you can see.  It came from an old barn beam I cut up that came from a barn just north of me about 30 minutes.  Checked all to heck and much of it is quite wormy, but I managed to get about 40 blanks out of it, some with great worm character and some clear like this piece.

Scott, you did an outstanding job with that American Chestnut.  I have about a half of an English Chestnut tree that took me 2 trips to get all of it.  I made one call out of it and plan on burning it this winter in my fireplace.  It is nice and dry.  *lol*

Nice piece of work Scott, Hate to work with the Chestnut myself. Hard to get good wood, Hard to tune, even hard to paint (for me) I can't imagine burning that stuff. You have a true talent.
