Bill, the grain is this wood is super tight and rarely gets over 1/16" as you can see.  It came from an old barn beam I cut up that came from a barn just north of me about 30 minutes.  Checked all to heck and much of it is quite wormy, but I managed to get about 40 blanks out of it, some with great worm character and some clear like this piece.

I knew it had to be old! Pat Strawser gave me several blanks, a few years ago that has that tight grain. That call is a true work of art and a real test of your patients!

For your next chestnut challenge..top one with ebony and then come back and tell us how much fun that was.. ROTFLMBO  I will agree with you that chestnut can be very inconsistent from one piece to the next..and a bear to tune. You did a beautiful job and I'm sure the gobblers will like it  *up* *up*

Thanks for all the comments guys...much appreciated.  Bill the barn was built in 1857, a large carved date could still seen on the main center bean--very cool.  As for "patience" yes, I do have a lot of it and you have to for the artwork.

Dave, someday I may accept that challenge with Ebony, sure enough the color contrast with the Chestnut would be beautiful.

Its good to see ya turning the corner on all that seasonal work ya got hammered with.
Even better to see some more of those calls burned with your artwork---they all are great to study the detail and craftsmanship. Know they are slap full of turkey mouth also !!!
And...you are right---Chestnut can and is very hard to get that will work in a call !!!
Great work as always Scott !!!  *bowing*

So happy to see this call, Scott. The burning looks fantastic, despite the difficulty of doing it on Chestnut. I think the Chestnut is really special. Another treasure for someone.
