I got invited to hunt a farm in Hyde Co, NC (bear country) saturday. We met at Hardees and made it to my buddies farm. Hadn't left the car and had one gobblin near the car. We set up about a 100 yards or so from the car and I started calling real soft on the trumpet. He just kept hammering, I finally slapped my hat on my leg a few times and waited, then gave him some soft clucks. I heard him flying my way and he landed about 30 yards and I let him have some 20ga hw#7's. I tried to call a bird in for my buddy, but couldn't get the birds to cross the canal. The coolest thing was after I shot my bird and heading to find him one, I saw a 400lb black bear or bigger crossing one of the paths. Great day and my first bird with a trumpet only. I was amazed at how they responded to the trumpet. Won't leave home without one.
