#2 and 3 hit the ground
« on: April 14, 2012, 08:29:09 PM »
This is one of them story that should start Once Upon a Time.  Short story called in 8 toms killed 2. BUT

We had 25 mph winds today. The bird were not talking at all on the limb. I walked in way before daylight about 3/4 of a mile and I hit the number 1 spot and couldn't get anything going. A couple of bird on the impact area but way over in the next area. So I walked out to the truck and drove around to check out the area and see if any birds had made their way into any of the green fields. I found one on a open spot on this winter wheat field an made a move on him but got busted by a hen and he seen me about the time I seen him and we know how that turned out. Well I drove back around to where my buddy was at and whille talking to them I see a flock of birds come out in this small field about 700 yards away. Well I know better to drive up and stop. I have to drive about 1/4 mile past them and circle and I get on this wood lot where they have been coming to. I break out a box call and start the show. They showup about 500 yards out on the other side and I called them to within 25 yards. There was 1 hen and 6 Toms. One strut'ed all the way and 1 had a double bread. I shot the strut'er and was going to drop the double bread one next but my gun jammed on me. I eject the shell put another one in and snap but nothing. I eject that one snap noting, I wasn't pulling the bolt back far enough. They run off. I spent the next 4 hours trying to get in front of them. I find a lone tom over by the wheat field. After an 1 1/2 hours he comes in gobbling at 25 yards and I dropped him but I'm almost 1.5 miles from the truck. Man my feet are sore but it sure was a heck of a day.

I have only gotten to hunt with a gun 2 mornings and 1/2 day on opening weekend. Been calling in birds for my buddies. So far on 7 days of hunting  I have called to within gun range 16 toms and 8 jakes. Seen 8 die, 3 walkoff due to bad angle, 1 miss.  Of course it increases the number of toms called in when you have 7 in one group. Been a good year so far and have ben having a blast.
