One of the things that really gets my blood boiling is call makers stealing other call makers work. Please read the following link and see what has happened to Larry Gresser of Prairie Game Calls. Guy's like this Leslie Boyer of 4- Vermont Game Calls need to be stopped!!! Please help me blanket this guy with emails to show him that we in the call making community will not tolerate this kind of *poo* !!!!

WOW, what a loser that vermont guy is.. I sent him an email, was probably too kind in it but here it is...
"Where i come from taking someone elses design for a call PATENTED OR NOT is STEALING. Larry worked for years on his calls, i am a callmaker myself and know how much SWEAT, BLOOD, and TEARS goes into one call. To reproduce his calls and sell them with your name on them is WRONG, FILTHY. Just thought i would let you know...."
-
This guy is a real arsehole. What nerve to steal someone's design and throw it in that person's face that he can do what he likes. I'm sure Larry would love to meet this jerk face to face.
I need to send this idiot an email.
-
what a joke that guy is. i hate it for larry (and countless others i'm sure), who have to deal with this.

Yes it is sad, the hard work and time they invest is simply taken without regard!

email sent......................... >:(.................was pretty pointed.....i'll post his reply..........if he does............

Sounds like he needs to be beat to sleep. Larry Gresser is a top notch guy as well as a callbuilder. I am really upset at this.
-
Not only is this guy a first class jack a**, he's also a total idiot. The e-mail exchange is so unbelievable that, if it wasn't so pathetic, it would be laughable. Good call on publishing the entire thing to "out" the guy.

Has anybody received an answer from the e-mails we sent this jerk? I haven't yet!!

It's one thing to make an honest mistake and not know someone has been doing this already, but that just really irks me the more I read it!!

Man, hate to see this bull *poo*!! Hit's pretty close to home. Larry's a good guy and respects people.. He deserves the same!!! The other guy, well, nuf said!!! Maybe it's time to give him the avirostick treatment!! >!!

Anyone get any response?
I sure haven't...

... Larry Gresser is a great callmaker & fine person - he, like many others, doesn't deserve this kind of disrespect from anyone; let alone from some design thievin' no-name punk "wanna-be" ... >:( >:(
Not a shot that I; for one; will ever buy a call from this pathetic "design copy-cat" hack - when I want a Larry Gresser caller, I get mine from Larry himself ... *bowing* *bowing*
-
I can't believe the stones this guy has............unreal. Regardless of whether it was Larry or not that level of disregard for another person has weasled it's way into just about everywhere in our society. Hurrah for me and **** you attitudes make me sick. It's just bad that it did happen to a good guy like Larry.

absolutely.

Bear with me while I play the Devil's Advocate here. I by no means condone what has happened, I've met Larry and he is a good guy and I hate that he got sucked into this. But from a historical perspective, there hasnt been a truly innovative friction turkey call design in decades. The same DD Adam's design in use for over 40 years remains the industry standard. Round surface, round pot, tone board, and striker. No matter how you change your selection in materials, widths, or thicknesses... in the end your still copying the original Adam's design. Just as most box call makers are copying Lynch and most trumpet makers are copying Turpin. So I ask you pot call makers, how are you any different than our friend from Vermont? Are you not copying an existing design? Most of you buy your materials from a handful of makers and I'd be willing to bet that the difference between the majority of calls is measured in micrometers. The truth is that while a call may be custom made, its design is by no means original.
I also wonder why there is such a gutteral reaction to this incident when there are countless other makers who's designs have been adulterated without so much as a blink of an eye?
Heck, there is at least one member of this site who's put together a pretty good collection simply sending other peoples calls to makers for them to copy. Once the copier is done taking notes and goofing up the call this bozo trades the call to a new up and coming maker. Wheres the outcry against him?
One thing is certain, ol' boy from Vermont isnt very bright. If the emails are any indication of how he plans to run his business and handle his customers he'll be out of business in no time.

i agree with what you are saying about how similar many pot calls are. there are only so many things you can do to put your stamp on them. that being said, my problem has to do more with the audacity of the guy from vermont, to tell larry that he has no control over him using his specs. i am sure a lot of call makers have broken down a call to check out the internals of some calls and then tweaked them to make them a little different. i'm not saying it's right, but i am sure it happens. however, i don't know of many folks who throw it in the face of the call maker they are "borrowing" a design from.
the guy in question here is an idiot. if you are going to use the same specs of another call maker, how could you be so stupid to put it in an email? great call makers earn respect, based on their own hard work. this clown is looking to skip the learning curve and then boast about it. i'm sure this guy will probably sell some calls on the internet to some unsuspecting folks, but i'm glad it is at least out in the open.
there are a couple of reasons i buy calls from people. part of it has to do with sound and quality and part of it has to do with the integrity of the person i am purchasing a call from. if 1 of those components is missing, i will not buy a call from that individual, regardless of who it is, or what their reputation (on sound alone) is.

I normally stay out of these type of post because, people get so firedup over their freind being screwed with but like Wiltznucs stated a round call is a round call. Now most of us try to set their calls apart from other in little way like hole design but when all of the layers are peeled away it still just a round call. You can change striker design but it's still a stick. The only thing I can do that you can't do to your calls is sign my name and I don't do that very often. Most people by pot calls for hunting not collecting now does all of this mean that this other guy is right? No, they should build there own call but you do have to admit he's has big balls to call another callmaker and tell him that he's going to use his calls as his own. Do beleive in this case my Red Neck'ism would kick in.
-
I'll have to disagree to some extent. To say a round call is just a round call is like saying a box call is just a box call, or a trumpet call is just a trumpet call, or a wing bone call is just a wing bone call, or well you get the idea. Not all calls are created equal!!! Some guy's are better at making certain types of calls. Larry made what this guy thought was an exceptional sounding call and has plains on "COPYING" that call. Granted all calls may be "SIMULAR" to other makers calls, but the same absolutly not!!!
-
OK Here goes, When Adam started wanting to learn turning pots he only had one persons pot. The short version. I contacted Wendell Rye (whom both the boys met in Atlanta and each one bought a pot. At the time the intention was due my health we were gonna try and turn 2 pots together for him and Scott. Wendell send me a blank pot (yes he did) and some different surface materials and sound boards. I promised Wendell and Adam didn't want to copy him. We checked all of Wendell's dimensions and started. He turned a three inch pot like Wendell's 3 1/2 to get the idea. Then he just started free thinking. He wanted something that fit the hand well for the hunter. Something that looked good. and of course something that sounds good.He has turned about 25-30 pots so far, he has decided on his style and the internals are similar (as are everyone else's) but still quite different. Each type surface and each type wood require a little different "internals". Anyone, and you can ask any good pot maker, that turns GOOD sounding pots will tell you that no two are "exactly" the same. It comes down to ethics. I told Wendell we would not copy his pot. We didn't. Nor would we knowingly copy anyones. To me the guy shows no moral ethical character. No respect for himself or Larry. And a problem with our society as a whole making a buck off someone else's work. If you get a pot from Adam you get a piece of him. And with it a friend that will do anything in the world to make sure you are satisfied. This is true. If someone calls about who builds a good pot I take them through about 10 names and never mention Adam's. There are people on here who can confirm that. I contacted Al Shoemaker about a couple of boxes and for some reason (God) we hit it off and I soon found out this was a man of integrity that makes a great call. Then I had to endure the frustration watching him go through thee same thing with a guy on eBay. Let the left wing democrat in Vermont copy Larry and guaranteed he will fall flat of his tush on a hard surface! I think there are many fine call makers. I wish i could buy from everyone, but I can't. But I can buy what I buy from a lot of men with character and ethics. And CALL THEM FRIEND! We do have other call makers pots now, and will have others. But Adam has my attention with his passion and hard work. And a good call to boot. And by the way, anyone that thinks one internal design will sound the same on all woods has lost their minds. Wood has a mind of it's own so to speak. It is something special to turn a pot or cut and assemble a box and have it talk Turkey to you. So as a preacher should say. May God deal decisively with the man in VT, And May Larry Gresser Prosper because of it !

I understand that some calls do sound better, look better, have more attention to detail, and play easier. Few people appreciate a finely tuned call as much as I do. I see what your trying to say, but the bottom line again is nearly the entire selection of "custom" and "production" friction calls are copies. To what extent or degree the copying happens doesnt matter, if you copy any aspect of this design then you are are a copier as well. Dont fool yourself with calling it "similar", thats a watered down way of saying you've copied. Theres no shame in being a copier, as the truth is 99% of pot call makers fall into this category. I think no less of the makers who make these pot calls, in fact many copies are far better than the originals. Consider the Model-T when compared to a new Lamborghini. Its only fair to give credit where credit is due. Make no mistake about it, if you make a round pot call using the Adam's design your copying another man's call. You can dress it up however you like, make your striker look funny, and use the strangest surface or pot materials known to man. In the end, its still a copy.

Now that's some funny stuff right there! ;D Seems I remember not long ago, you got mad on another forum because another member sold one of your callmaker buddy's calls? ??? Why did that upset you so much if it was just a copy of someone else's? Heck you even deleted your account.. ROTFLMBO Really, why was it any of your business how long the guy had the call before he sold it? He paid for the call and it was his to do with what he saw fit. Heck, he could have thrown it in a pond for that matter, and it would have been no one's business! Exactly what makes you the expert on what's a copy and what' not? Do you build calls? ???

You dont know me guy,... get a life and go be a troll somewhere else. Come back when your ready to discuss the topic at hand.
-
Chad, so you call me a troll because I ask some questions you don't care to answer ??? I'm no troll, and yes I do know you very well!! ;)
-
Well then, why hide in anonymity? If you know me so well, you already know the answer to the very questions you posed?
-
Seriously, I really don't know why it upset you so much because someone sold one of your buds calls. He paid for the call. It was his to sell. I guess my question is, Do you consider that call a copy?

watch out fellerz....ol' wiltednutz...is a bit sensi.....tive..... :-\

This isnt a Q&A with Chad Wiltz. Until your willing to identify yourself, I really dont feel compelled to answer any questions regarding the situation from the forum I used to be a member of. The collector and I resolved the issue months ago. So what exactly is your role in the matter?
The discussion is about copying, to answer your final question...yes I do and so does the maker.
-
watch out fellerz....ol' wiltednutz...is a bit sensi.....tive..... :-\
Careful, the moderators here may catch on that they've banned you already.
-
Wiltz If a guy go's out and makes a call useing the same exact materials and specs as DD Adams than thats a copy. If he claims that it's an original than it's a fake copy. If he builds one and labels it a reproduction of the original than it's a reproduction. All other call that are built today I would call in the style of DD Adams. Just like guys who build Cost style calls!!
Comparing a Modle-T to a Lamburgini is like comparing apples to oranges!! Yea apples and oranges are round!! ROTFLMBO
-
Well, I guess if you glued a piece of glass or slate in a frisbee, you'd be copying because the frisbee is round.. ;D

So based on your flawed logic, all our friend from Vermont has to do is change strikers, wood choice, or surface materials and he's no longer copying anyone. So what exactly is your problem with him again?

I'm getting confused with all these internet aliases; can I just call you Turkeycommander or jOe instead?

I gotta say I agree with Tom,Lou and the others here. The guys a jerk ( maybe more so than me even ;) ) and somebody needs to tell him what he did is wrong sounds like you guys already did that. There are plenty of less obvious, and less bold knock off artist out there though that might be worse cause they are smart enough to know what they are doing is wrong.
-
No what he said was he wanted Larry's internal dimension so he could make the call!!! That is copying "Larry's" call plain and simple!!! It has nothing to do with DD Adams orininal design and I really don't care how you try to twist it Wiltz the only similarity between any call made today is that they work off the same principal and are simular in design. A copy is an exact replica and that is what the guy in Vermont wants to do!!!
[/quote]
-
Dont get yourself so worked up Tom, the point being made here is that copying is far more pervasive than you might think. Its also clear that what one man considers copying, another might not. Like Wisky said, ol' Boy could have done his copying in a clandestine fashion and I can assure many others have done just that. What can be done? Without a patent or copyright, the answer is nothing. I understand your frustration, but this is not the first nor the last time someone will be copied in call making. Trust that Larry's on a road that many other call makers have already traveled.
-
Chad
For one of the few times, I agree w/ your point. I suspect, there are some patented designs that are being used (unknowingly) by many of the guys making pot calls...also. It is darn hard to make calls today that someone hasn't tried at some point in time that have been incorporated into a given callmakers call. Copying, to me, is when someone knowingly takes another persons' (unique) idea or design and makes that call and calls it his own. Unfortunately, as angry as that would make someone, it happens all the time.

I think that most of the truely good pot calls, trumpet calls and box calls are so close to being the same that most non call makers couldn't tell the differents. Now everyone like to think that they have that special mojo to make a call unique but the truth of the matter very few has that special mojo and the rest of use find it fun looking for it.
Then you have guys like this one and I'm sure if the truth was really being told that some of the well known call makers have done something like this but not to this degree and some even worse. My feeling on it is knowingly measuring someone call is just wrong. If you want to make a great pot call or any other call then put the time into figuring it out don't steal it. Nor be like this guy asked for it, the bottom line is that this guy wants to make money not calls. heck, simply don't buy them after he get a stock pile he'll quit. Now this is JMO an we all know what they say about opinions.
Once a call is sold then it no longer belongs to the callmaker if they can turn a profit on it, then more power to them. Unless I need to fix a call or tune it then I more than likely will never have that call again but don't think that you are going to get call after call just to sell them. If the callmaker allows this to happen then they have nothing to complain about. Should be thankful that it was purchased the first time.
-
I'm not naive enough to believe that copying is not happening. I know it is!!
I also know for a fact that there are new designs that have not been tried or are not out there yet.
I also know if I find out that someone copies another call makers design I will expose them for what they truely are and thats nothing more than a THIEF!!!
-
I've heard of callmakers microwaving pot calls to take em apart and see how they are inside. I've heard of callmakers x-raying calls too. Thats just what they admit to doing on a public forum. Maybe I'm missing something but that is just as bad maybe worse than what the bold idiot tried to do.
-

I've heard that its been done. From more than one person. Lets pretend for a second that it hasn't happened. What about guys using microwaves to disassemble a pot? Is it wrong? Is it any different than the bozo that emailed Larry. He was honest even if he was totally wrong in doing so. I certainly a call to arms might be needed but this guy dosen't have a monopoly on knocking off calls.

not sure how being honest about stealing is admirable. i'm sure people copy the guts of the calls all the time and i'm certainly not saying it's right, but for someone to be so stupid to admit it, on an email, is beyond comprehension. as for the guy being honest to larry, i think he was trying to strong arm him and basically say, give me what i want or i will copy your call. either way, the guy is a punk in my book and looks like a fool because of it.
-
Don't think I said anything about being admirable you shouldn't read into stuff anymore than what I typed. No I'm not excusing what the guy did or saying he was right either. If you guys want to clean the callmaking world up I wouldn't stop at this guy or even start on him cause he's far from the worse. Just look around. Thats my only point. Punk, fool, and stupid certainly do fit them emails I do agree with that.

my bad, i just didn't see how it was relevant that the guy was being honest when he said he was going to copy the call. honest, or dishonest, it's wrong. we can agree on that. *cheers*

So is there a differents in say a spin off and coping a call. If so were is the line drawn? I think we all copy something in our daily lives and in this case turkey calls is no exception. I don't see there being any new designs on a pot call coming out.

I have been following this post, watched it go from the specific to the general then back and forth. It all revolves around the intent to deceive. Is it the intent of a call maker to copy another and deceive the public into believing the design is his? That's what must be proven.
If someone said " If I could do it the way you do it, I would do it that way!" and he did it. That's' intent. Now how about he gave you credit for the idea. Now what?
When two call makers come up with the same idea independently and make calls using it. Is one going to stop? It would be ludicrous for one to do so. Does each have to prove it was their original idea?
How about the x-ray issue. Museums do it all the time to learn history so they can make replicas and not destroy the originals. Same deal for calls. I don't think we want to cut up or clean an old yelper stuffed with cobwebs. We would never know that the infamous "Clucker" had hand chased threads or even came apart at one time, if a dentist had not volunteered his high tech machine to peer inside. What was the intent?
Remember intent to deceive must be proven. Is it worth it? Do you have the resources to do it and make the other guy stop or pay up?

So is there a differents in say a spin off and coping a call. If so were is the line drawn? I think we all copy something in our daily lives and in this case turkey calls is no exception. I don't see there being any new designs on a pot call coming out.
i take it you haven't met the "king"......... :-\
That was cold. Funny...... But cold.

So if someone isn't as bold and obvious when they try to copy its alright. Thats how your post reads.

the way i read it is that if there is intent to deceive, then it is wrong. and if two people come up with the same idea independently, then who is to say which person came up with the idea.
