Whiney Gobblers
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:05:56 PM »
Last weekend when I finally tracked down my gobbler group I witnessed what I thought was pretty funny.
When the group decided it was time to pitch down (about 9am) they left a couple at a time in different directions and hit the ground yelping. Every one of them had left the roost except for one big longbeard. When he was all alone he started whining. It sounded like he was pleading for the rest not to leave him. I don't know if I could replicate it.... It was like a cross between a Kee & a purr- almost sounds like my dog whining when she wants some food or to go outside to pee and you are taking to much time.

Anyone else heard this before? I never have in over 25+ years in the woods.

All turkeys make whinning sounds. Some suggest it is a contentment call, but I hear it from lone birds as well as birds in a group.

I don't think this old boy was content, he was fidgetting around going from limb to limb and just didn't want to fly down. I really think he was begging them not to leave him!

I might try to see if I can make the sound with a box call. Who knows, maybe it will be a good fall call???

Heard um whine but not in that setting!

I busted up a group of about 8 -10 longbeards on a riverclub one fall morning.  They were in a wheat field next to a heavy willow flat next to the river and flew up in the willows out in the trees about 100 yards off the field.  I eased in and sat down between them and the wheat field.  After about 45 minutes they started clucking and doing a whiney yelp.  It would start off with a long whine and go into two or three yelps.  I  started doing this on an box that had a deep yelp.  If they clucked, I clucked.  If they whiney yelped, I did too.  After about 20 minutes of this, I heard one pop his wings.  He was too far to my right to shoot right handed as he was coming down to my back right in the field.  I switched the gun to my left shoulder and shot him when he touched the ground.  If you have ever read Mr. Wineman's new book, the first chapter is all about that call.  "That ain't no call, THIS is a call".   I started using that whiney yelp and have called up several long beards in the fall with that call.  I seems to work well on those longbeards in the fall.

I have used that whine proceeding a yelp many times. Easy to do on a pot call.

John,
Every time you post something I have to read it! You sir, are a fine storyteller. Your writing reminds me of the way my Grandfather speaks and I can't get enough of it.

 *cheers*

I'm going to have to read that book sometime

Thanks Shad,  My wife would disagree with you.   About a year ago, she told my daughter, "Now he's posting stories ON THE INTERNET!!!"

If you like my stories, you'll love Wade's books.  I start off with them before the season every year and finish up with Tenth Legion.  It's about time to start.

Where can you find those books? I'm sure the Barnes & Nobles here in town doesn't have a turkey hunters section  ;D

For East of the Slash.  Go to Amazon and it will run you about $50 because it is what's called a greenback.   For Bird of Courage, you can order it direct from Wade at www.bestturkeybooks.com.  In the  picuture of the 3 guys on the porch in Franklin Co., I am the old guy helping Doc Griffin hold the fan of a nice Franklin Co. bird.  You may also notice a set of feet and beard on the pier railing where Wade is posing with a Franklin Co. Stomper.  We doubled that day.  A fun day in Franklin Co. a number of years ago.
