I've hunted turkeys in just about any weather and environment you can think of. Lighten Storms, 4 degree setting on a frozen swamp because it was the clearest spot to sit, even hunting during the worst rain storm in TN (13 inch) in one day and hunted when it was so hot only a fool would be sweating that bad.
But a Forest Fire now that's a new one for me.
What happen was that there was a fire over on the impact area you could smell smoke at daylight but couldn't see any flames. Well about 10 O'clock the wind picked up and sparked the flame back to life. I was about 3/4 of a mile form the truck check for turkey sign up on a hard wood flat. It's so dry all of the water holes are dry and the turkeys have moved into a different area. About 11 or so there is a super cloud of smoke that cover the area I'm in. Real fresh and strong smelling. I start back to the direction of the truck and the smoke is getting worse by the minute. Then I hear the flames cracking and popping like crazy it's eating up the undergrowth, igniting cedar tree all over the place. An it's between me and the truck. i think OH Chit my truck in on the side of the road right where the fire is coming from. I have to make a wide swing to the NW to get around the fire. I was humping like crazy when I see this rabbit come running past me. Thank God it wasn't a turtle. I'm wait to here my truck blow up in the fire . Thinking heck boy you got insurance just get to that darn road. When I break out on the road you can't see more than 20 yards or so I had fire on both side of the road . I hear some thing an can't make it out. So I'm long stepping it. I break up over a raise and I see blue lights and hear the siren. I start waving my hat and the MP see me he pulls up to me and say "You need to move your truck it's setting in the only place not on fire yet. Can you believe it the fire went down both side of my truck. I get in the truck and there that darn rabbit.
Reckon I should have followed him.
