Special about Remington 700

I have a question that I ask at the beginning of every Hunter Safety Class I teach...."Whats the first thing you do when you pick up a firearm?"   You would be amazed at the answers i get...POINT THE MUZZLE IN A SAFE DIRECTION!!! period  thats first and foremost...A firearm has many mechanical parts that can fail...If you control the muzzle you can avoid an accident...Some of the things I see in the field makes me wonder why there arent more accidents. If someone shoots themself or someone else while unloading or handling a firearm in any way they were not controlling the muzzle!   With that said Remington has to make the public aware of that potential...We are talking about a firearm here...That is a life threatening problem..I do not own a Remington Rifle and chances are I will not now...

Regardless of political affiliation, I'm a believer that where theres smoke there is fire.  Could the story be sensationalized?  Absolutely, but if even half the story is grounded in truth then Remington has some explaining to do...

To say the story in made up because the station has liberal tendencies is simply electing to keep your head in the sand.  They provided over 3 decades of documentation, and just based on the few anecdotes in this thread it certainly seems possible that an issue exists..

 I Have had this problem happen on MY rifle and my dads. I'm not ignoring the problem in anyway. But CNBC is anti-gun. Therefore they cannot and will not give an objective opinion. As No Bull said MUZZLE CONTROL eliminates these incidents. Therefore the man or woman has to take responsibility for there actions when they shoot someone!!!!!!! Yes, Remington will probably do like Ruger and produce a trigger that has to be removed and replaced (Cheaper than building a better trigger). A rifle comes from the manufacturer with 5-7 lbs of trigger pull. I don't know about you but i can't shoot a rifle with any accuracy with a trigger set that high. Thus costing me and you more money to get proper trigger pull on our guns. Remington is a target of opportunity for this report, yes they need to improve the trigger system. Yet these cost will be passed on to the consumer. Liberal tactic to increase the price of weapons thus decreasing there availability to the common man!

Regardless of whether or not CNBC is anti-gun, it doesn't change the facts that there have been problems with this gun in the past and will probably continue to have these same issues in the future.  Blaming CNBC won't change the fact that Remington has had problems with the Model 700 line of guns.
Just for the record I'm neither a fan of CNBC nor Remington.

Lost my internet connection while reading the story, but: Over 5 million 700s sold, 12 certifiable accidental discharges? Thats if I am reading the story correctly. Out of those 12 fatalities, how many were from guns that had trigger work done on them? Had a gunsmith worked on any of these weapons for any reason. I guess what I am getting at is, it seems to me that Remington has constantly produced a very reliable weapon for MANY years. Now, is there something in the report that stated that there are many more instances where ( thank God) death didnt occur but still an AD occurred? I hunt with a 700 and use another 700 at work. The work gun has had over 3000 rounds through it and I have never had a problem nor have I witnessed a problem, and we have 9 700s in operation here
