Special about Remington 700

Its a pretty major black eye for Remington, my first rifle was a Remington 760 pump action and I have a Model 7 that has been very good to me.

To be honest I lost favor with Remington several years ago.  Once they started producing the 710 and then importing cheaply made Russian/Baikal made singles and doubles I knew the company was cheapening the product.  Smith and Wesson is guilty of the same...

I cant say I'm surprised by the report, but on the other hand 10 fatalities among 5 million products sold is a pretty good margin, and lets be honest guns by nature arent exactly "safe".  Whats interesting is how Remington has handled the situation, by comparison this week a stroller company named Graco recalled its 2 million strollers due to a few deaths... Remington on the other hand has done nothing!

I have owned a bunch of Remington 700s in my life. I presently have 6. I have always thought the 700 trigger was the best and safest trigger I have messed with. I have set the trigger pull at 2 1/2 lbs on a couple of them and bounced them on the floor and they would not go off. Unless Remington has changed their product with the newer guns I cannot imagine one of them going off unless the trigger is being pulled with the safety off. JMHO

I was woodchuck hunting with a friend one day when he went to unload his 700 and it went off. The bullet missed my right foot by inches!! He sold that gun that week!! Talk about a close call we both  in our pants!!

I think this was the big problem with the 700, it remains very easy for even the novice gunsmith to manipulate the trigger...

Stupid is as stupid does. Mine is set on 3lbs. By experience you set the trigger at less 2.5 lbs the 700 becomes very dangerous. The gun will fire when you close the bolt hard! One of the best triggers ever made. But when people mess with the trigger and don't practice proper GUN SAFETY. She will kill you! I shoot mine till I die! Cnbc is just make a stink because they are anti gun!!

I agree with you 3CB. My Remington big game rifles have trigger pulls set at 3 lbs. I have a trigger pull gauge so I know where they are at. The two I have at 2 1/2 lb pulls are varmint rifles. But like I said, I have bounced these on the floor with the buttstock and cannot make the gun dry fire. I did see a Winchester Model 70 go off twice one day when a gentleman was showing me how the 3 postion safety would not fire the gun whenever the safety was placed in the middle postion. He kept pulling the trigger and the gun kept going off with live rounds. I wanted away from him fast. That convinced me that day that guns do not kill, but stupid people do!!!

Rickey your last statement is par on!!!  Anything can fail and that is why we most always remember, point the muzzle in a safe direction.  A safety is not 100% fail safe.  I never walk with my Encore loaded.  I've missed the opportunity at many deer, but I sure do not trust the mechanical safeties built into the gun that pulling the hammer back and forward real fast wouldn't set the gun off.  Shooting a .460... wow I'd hate for that thing to hit me in the head!

I've owned Remingtons all my life and never had one go off on accident. 

I know Remington's newer triggers are supposed to fix this issue.

I must be having a dejavu (sp) moment. It has been a while, but Ruger stopped making a trigger that you could mess w/, years ago, for the same reasons. Now everyone has an adustable trigger....for the at home gunsmith! The sear on the Remington trigger is prone to let off if adjusted to much...been there and seen it happen way to many times!

Last year I bought a brand new Model 700 Sendero SF2 in 7mm for moose hunting. When I sighted it in, I had trouble ejecting the shells, so I sent it back to the factory. I got it back from them, and they told me the bolt was worn out! It had a total of 10 shells fired through it. It was supposedly fixed, but the third shell failed to extract. I took it back and traded it in on a browning. Thanks Remington!

Had an old 30-06 700. It went off one time when I was just starting to shuck the shell out. Lucky I was pointing it toward the ground. Took it to a gunsmith to see what the problem was. Turned out to be a piece had wore down in the bolt after so many years of use and abuse. I wouldn't trade my old Remington for nothing. It has put a many a back strap in the freezer. Also, she is my baby. Roc

Adam's 1st deer rifle gun I bought him was a 700 when he was 10. It has been a good one. I stll prefer the Ruger M77 anyday! Had one for almost 30 years and it is simply the best gun for the money you can buy! In mmy opinion.
