All my pots so far have been made with slate, glass, and blasted alluminum strike surface. I think there may be pros and cons to all surfaces such as slate can get a little slick on dewey mornings but I feel it also has the ability to produce some of the best turkey sounds imagineable. Glass with a carbon tip striker seems to be able to play even when wet. One of the drawbacks of glass is it takes an awful lot of conditioning and a novice caller may struggle with that. Blasted alluminum sounds great right out of the gate but eventually will need some conditioning.  My question is how do you feel about ceramic as a strike surface and what are the pros and cons? Is there a perfect material for the strike surface?

I run friction calls a bunch. Copper holds up the best of anything I use. The ceramic has a wonderful tone, and look. But the same problem in the custom call as with the production calls the surface gets slick. But you must understand that I run a call in the same area every time I pick the call up. I mark them so that my hold is the same every time. What it boils down too is they all have different tendency's. You have to learn to care for them if your going to run them properly. Green scrub pads and light grit sand paper work wonders. A lighter will dry that slate surface in a heart beat, just be careful to lightly heat it up or you may crack the surface.

I guess everyone has a preference. Personally mine is Copper then slate.

So far I've really enjoyed the ceramic.  I've played mine a lot and haven't had to do too much conditioning yet.  I've seen the striker load up and a quick re-conditioning has brought it back to life.

well  i   would   have  to  go  with  glass  as  my    fav..then  titanium..everythin  i  have  ever  used  you  have  to  condition  it  properly..i  think  anythin  will   slick  up  or  load  up  or  what  ever  you  wana   call  it  if   you  run  it  alot...i  just  prefer  glass...so  far... *lol*...

I think i would go with glass as it has the ability to play wet with a carbon tipped striker and it don't hurt  that you can put a beautiful image behind the glass!

 Fortunately....or.....unfortunately, there isn't a perfect surface. If there were, the debate would be mute. And since everyone has their favorite(s), the issue will remain, a mixed one. Personally, I carry two....one slate and one glass. The glass comes in handy in wet weather and the slate is my go to for really soft calls. I am begining to warm up to the ceramic custom call. You can keep the K&H plastic pot calls....to inconsistant for me!

Slate, for some reason I just love a good slate call , glass is nice but a good raspy aluminum makes em gobble  ;D

i  agree, ihavnt made any  with  the  ceramic...but  i  usually   have  my   favorite   slate   in  my  vest  for   soft  callin...basically  a  purr pot...but  i  really  like   my  trumpets  as   of  late....and  ya dont have to condition em... *lol*

I have several custom pot calls with different surfaces. I love them all. I got bronzed glass,slate, copper, and titanium. A ceramic surfaced caller is mext on my list.  *up*

... the callmaker that turned & tuned the individual pot (& striker) has more to do with a great soundin' "top shelf" caller, than does the type of surface ... :-\

... & then again, there's always "the nut behind the bolt" factor ... ;)
