PA 2014 spring harvest
« on: June 12, 2014, 09:03:48 PM »

I killed this bird on may 29th, using my Austin Hornberger boxcall, a maple over mahogany gem of a killa' call, now with its second harvest in a row.   18 lbs, 1 inch spurs, and a 9 1/2 beard, which shows some evidence of beard rot. Remington gun, 3"  turkey nitro shells in #5. Thanks for the look, Lonnie

Thanks guys, we had rain early in the AM that day, and I knew of a turkey management field, in the Michaux State Forest, south central PA, that was bound to have some birds in it. I had been watching turkeys all week, since Memorial day weekend, and the rainy day dampness made a quiet entry to the fields edge. At 9:00 am, I seen five birds, move into the lower corner of the 5 acre field, feeding in the fox tail grass. I would cluck, two notes, then maybe only one, then repeat 5 minutes later. Everytime I called, red heads popped up all around, as they slowly moved my way. This bird offered the first available shot, at 32 yards. They were soaking wet from the grass, and I really had to look to see this beard, the shorter section stood out, making it appear as a jake, then he would strut, full fan displayed. One time he turned fairly quick, and I seen the longer beard swing free from his breast feathers, and I took the shot moments later. Jon, glad to hear of your harvest as well, we both were cutting it close, with only three days left. Glad you got out and around, I thought of you right before the season started.    AND , that Austin Hornberger box, I cant say enough about his calls, of course you all already know that . Thanks again for the look see.

Nice going Lonnie, a beard with some rot is muich better than no beard, Austin makes a solid caller for sure!
