Is there such a thing as TOO much chalk?
« on: May 07, 2014, 10:24:41 AM »
I heard from a source that shall remain nameless (not really, it's Porter) that railroad chalk is good to use on box calls.  I honed in on some green railroad chalk, and decided this would be my new go-to chalk.  The problem was that I could only find it in boxes of 144.  I figured, ah what the heck, and made the order.  So, I tell Porter about it and he laughs at me, saying I'll be set for life!  I thought he was just exaggerating, remembering how quickly I go through those little sticks, unless I lose them first.

Well, the box came yesterday, and now I get the joke - these ain't no little sticks  *lol*!

Yep, plenty of chalk for a while! I'm no expert on chalk, but I have read, that any chalk that has pastel colors in it, contains some oils. I only buy the white railroad chalk because of that.

Wow, I hope that's not true, Bill.  Otherwise, I'm going to have to start getting into sidewalk art, or something, haha.  Most of the chalk I see people using now (on custom boxes, at least) appears to be the yellow railroad chalk.  I thought I'd be safe with green rr chalk.  Do you know where you read that, re: pastel chalk containing oils?  I can't find anything about it online.  I even emailed Markal to ask them; I bet I get a speedy response on that one,  *lol*.

After doing a Google search, they do make RR chalk in pastel colors that is, oil free. So, I would guess that yours is oil and acid free. I also noticed that they make a RR chalk holder. This may be something to consider, if you wish to carry a large piece of chalk while you are hunting. I'm ordering one just to see if it will work.

Ah, thanks Bill; good to know!  I haven't been able to find anything on my particular brand, but I sure hope you're right.

That's too funny you mentioned the holder.  I was debating trying one, and now I'm going to have to pull the trigger!

Use the part # on the box when talking to Markal, they may make several types of chalk the same color. White RR chalk is made by different recipes, some oil/wax free, some not.

Some colors play better on some calls...believe it or not. Some like blue, some like white, some like brown and some orange. Guess it's what's in the chalk......Experiment with your different calls because not all like the same!
