A lot of Bird in that Call
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:53:40 PM »
I thought I would share the details of an interesting hunt I had in Kansas a few weeks ago.

I was hunting one morning in a pasture with lots of scattered trees and set up to try and strike a bird, since I hadn’t heard any gobble.

A while after calling, I noticed some movement and saw something on a hill several hundred yards across a draw, running down the hill in my direction. Before I could get my binoculars on it to see what it was, it went behind some trees. I was sure whatever I saw was not an animal, as it didn't bounce like a four-legged critter.... After a short wait, a rooster pheasant appeared on my side of the draw moving steadily my way. It moved behind some brush and I largely disregarded it, until it cut loose a ground-shaking crow about 10-15 feet beside me. I couldn’t see it until it strolled into the open, generally re-tracing its approach 40 or so yards away.

I happened to have a new camera with, so I grabbed it and tried to get a decent photo while I had a chance. After shooting a few photos it was getting farther and farther away – about 75 yards.

Quickly recollecting, I thought this rooster seemed to show some similar behavioral signs as a hot gobbler coming to a call, so I grabbed my Twisting Creek one-sider and stroked a few yelps. The rooster immediately came to full alert and much to my surprise, broke into a full sprint straight back towards the call. I was lucky enough to capture several photos as it began to slow down when it got close.

Eventually the rooster’s interest waned and it slipped back towards the draw. Two more separate times I repeated this scenario when I could see the rooster.

All I can say is my friend Jeff certainly put a lot of bird in this call!!!!   *up*  *up*

Oh no- I really hate this happened to ya Eric,,,you've been had by the same bird that fooled Jon with his Baby Doll call.
I regret informing you have been duped by a experienced old gobbler in disguise man. That bird- like Jon's- was dressed up like a pheasant to fool ya so he didn't get shot!!! I bet he had 2" spurs and ya never thought to look for this trick gobblers have learned. I think your gobbler is more experienced sense he has learned to crow like a cock- Jon's hasn't got that smart yet- he just disguised himself like a bear  *peep*!!
I am sure you would loose countless sleepiness nights if ya had seen that clever gobblers spurs !!!
Glad to hear the call is working for ya friend  *lol* *peep* ROTFLMBO
This could get interesting .......

Eric ya really have to watch those calls Jeff makes and I really need to try mine on pheasants, thanks for the info. Beware if you hunt in Bear country they love those calls , not only did the bear come to the call once he came to it twice. This must some type of universal call Jeff is making and not telling his customers.
Tomorrow I may even try it on crows since turkey season went out today. I'll keep ya posted I just hope it dont work on rattlers!

I thought some of Jeff's calls sounded a little strange when I heard him play them in Nashville. Jeff, how did you come up with a rooster call? Is it a locator call or do use it while hunting pheasants? This could really be interesting, tell us the whole story. If you had one of my Cricket calls you would have had that rooster at your feet.   ROTFLMBO

With Eric, Tom and Jon's call being universal and proven to call multi species- I think I should market them as Universal calls.. ....And maybe even charge more  *lol* *lol*.
Down south of the Mason Dixon- they really work good on opossums
Like the turtle man says---"get ya some"
Hahahaha
Bob- any advice on tuning for crickets is appreciated a lot

Yeah, I bet this would get real interesting if I enter that dude in the Turkey Contest. 2" spurs and had his beard tucked into his chest and running the entire underside of his tail. Guess that would be bout 35" beard easy....

*ride*

Osage Strutters would be looking pretty strong. Y'all just as well pack it in!  *lol*   *lol*

This is cool Eric, but having said that I too have a Twisting Creek call that ACTUALLY calls turkeys....based on this new research, I surely have a bum call and was dupped out of my $ and I must be doing something wrong while running it.
