San Juan River New Mexico, fly fishing
« on: October 27, 2009, 05:54:33 PM »
I have literally been out of touch....no cell phone, no internet for 10 days.  Well I was in touch a couple days going and a a couple days returning.

The San Juan River in New Mexico is the No. 1 tail water trout fishing in the U.S.  The river comes out of the Navajo Lake and is 42 degrees year around.  There is 5 miles of quality waters with thousands of fish per square mile.  But man, they are finicky eaters and have seen so many flies, you better be tied up right and present it naturally or they won't touch it.  This is only the third time I've been fly fishing but I caught enough big ones to be satisfied.  We camped out for 6 days on the river with a bunch of friends from Abilene, TX.  Had Bible studies around the campfire at night and fished during the day and ate like kings.  Beautiful country and fantastic weather.

Here are the only photos that I have of the big ones.

my first 18 inch of two

my 19 inch and he was a monster, took forever to land him

my 21 inch

caught two other 14 inchers but didn't get any pics.

Thats awesome! I lived out in Arizona for a while and loved to catch those trout. I lived at Lake Powell and fish down river of the Glenn Canyon Dam. The water was cold year round as well. Does New Mex have a barbless hook law like Az?

Creek,
The first five miles below the dam are "quality waters" and barbless hooks are required and it's all catch and release.

As it should be!
Glad you had the opportunity!
