Well, I think you could make it a little easier on yourself and try glass over glass for a box call

perhaps try inlaying a piece of slate under the lid, old school style, it might not be that noticable with the darker ebony lid.?

That's what I was worried about...they'd just skate on one another.  I'll think about inlaying another material on the bottom of the lid.  Thanks.

I was thinking about the ebony/ebony combo for an aesthetic reason.  But I asked because I also want the call to play well, even if it's a decorative call.

Inlaying slate might be a good solution.  I buy my slate discs from Grassy Creek.  I don't see slabs on their site.  I'll drop them an e-mail, though, to check.

X2 on that one ...for sure. 

I guess you like a challenge??   A pure slate lid would work as a lid.  If you want the total look of ebony just inlay / inset a smaller rectangle of slate only where it strikes the rails. If you rough up the underside of the ebony lid as already stated (but don't worry about that too much until way later in the tune). Maybe think of resin instead of chalk. THIN down the walls on the body of the call to allow it to vibrate and respond to the lid on the rails. There should be a spot or zone there where it will work. It should produce a fair to decent sound.  I don't know the size of your body cavity in the call but it will also need some room to resonate. Pick your grain orientation in both lid and body CAREFULLY. And GO SLOW ON THE TUNNING.  If not...be a real nice paperweight.
