15 Years
« on: September 26, 2012, 03:04:40 PM »
I came home yesterday and found my dog dead. He was a lab mix. For the past 15 years he was my best friend and I was his. I knew he would not be with me much longer. His name was Fletch or as the little girl that lives down the mountain from me called him Fletch Sneed. Fletch was the smartest dog I have ever been around and was a very good trukey dog also. I whent through some tough times with Fletch right there with me. When my wife died 10 years ago I would set and talk to him like he was a person. He would set and look at me like he knew what I was sayiing. I could show him something one time and he never forget it. He would lay beside me and never move while I would call to a Fall turkey that he had busted from a flock and never move until I pulled the trigger. He was a dark brown and I did not have to cover him, just say lay still Fletch and he would never move. The odd thing is, yesterday a friend emaild me and asked me if I would like to have a lab mix pup. I told him no that I did not want another dog until something happened to Fletch,  and about an hour latter I when home and found him. I will get another dog someday but I don't want one right now. I sure am going to miss my best frind.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your best friend. I always felt that one of the greatest injustices of mankind is that our dogs are not here with us on this earth very long. I feel for you....hang in there!

I feel for you Lonnie. I lost my 17 year old friend a couple years ago and it is a piece of your life suddenly missing. Your dog sounded a lot like mine. A half-breed that was maybe the smartest dog I have ever seen.

Lonnie---dog people all understand and feel your loss.....its a $#@ tough thing.
They earn a part of the family and become a true friend no doubt.
Our companions are not with us long enough, as their life span is alot shorter than ours. Ya know it when ya bring them home, but its something ya ignore until ya have to face that day. I have Goldens, I have hunted with them and they are a very important part of my life also. So far, I have battled cancer in two of them and eventually had to put them down. I was a wreck let me say. They were companions as I stated.
Get back in the game friend. Get another companion, not a replacement, as there will never be that, but you will find that a new COMPANION will find another place in your heart to share time with .
Sorry for your loss
