Glenn C. “Tink” Smith age 101, formerly of Piedmont, WV died at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV on Sunday, April 15, 2012. He was born in Piedmont on April 5, 1911 and was the son of the late Charles H. Smith and Theresa (Inskeep) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Pleasants) Smith and his son, Clay Smith and a brother, Evers Smith and two sisters, Alma Coffman and Louise Taylor.
Tink was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont, WV. He was the last surviving member of the Class of 1929 of Piedmont High School. He attended Potomac State College and WV University from1932 to 1934 and was a key player on the basketball teams at both schools. He played semi-pro basketball for several years before returning home to help coach youth basketball in the area. He helped coach Piedmont High School too two state championships and five runner-up teams. He served in the Army as a forward observer during WWII from 1944 until 1945. He was a member of the Piedmont American Legion Post 52 and the McCoole VFW, Post 6775 and Mt. Carbon lodge # 28 AF and AM. He was a proud member of the National Wild Turkey Federation which he joined in 1985. He was known for his wildlife photography and won many awards. He received first place in the NWTF photography contest in 1982 and was named WV sportsman of the year in 1983. He was named as the WV Foremost Wildlife Photographer in 1984. In 1988 Tink was recognized at the NWTF’s C.B. McLeod Distinguished Service Award for outstanding support through the media and Wild Turkey Photographs.
He worked for the US Government for 30 years as a postal carrier in Piedmont, WV. He loved hunting and fishing and taking wildlife photographs. He had a great love for the outdoors and working with kids.
Tink is survived by his daughter, Judie Pennings and Bruce of Berkley Springs, WV. And a daughter-in law, Elaine Smith of Parsons, WV. As well as five grandchildren, 10 Great-Grandchildren and two Great-Great Grandchildren.
In accordance with his wishes, Tink is to be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Keyser High School in Keyser, WV at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Bart Thompson, Pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friend from Noon until the time of services at the High School. Military Honor will be held after the services outside the High School.
