conditioned glass VS Blasted
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:08:27 AM »
Just thought I'd raise the question of what you fellows think of the comparrison of conditioning glass yourself with stone, sand paper or whatever you may use to using blasted glass. I'm interested in the pros and cons of going either way! I've done both and except for the ready to go and ease of blasted glass i'm still undecided.

Kelly.

Personally I'm not a fan of blasted glass.  I don't care for the sound it produces compared to a well conditioned regular glass call.  IMO

Thanks guys I believe that takes a little of the trial and error out of it as everybody feels the same! I've used a couple pieces of blasted glass but not enough to of gathered good insight! *up*

I do prefer a call surface I have conditioned myself.  However, been tinkering around some with a blaster.  The surface you get is very dependent on the medium you use and length / time of exposure.  It really does make a difference in the blasted surface as far as "playability". But now thats just me and my experience.  ;D

BB glass does kinda have a dull sound and feel to the striker in my opinion.  I have done some BB for call makers and on my own calls.  I find you still need to condition it by hand to get it right.  BB is nice for an initial roughing on crystal in prep for hand roughing with paper but thats about it. With that said, I personally like to do it by hand.  If you do BB use a fine grit such as 180 or finer and go over it quickly and evenly so it doesn't mess the surface up too bad the go to paper or what ever.

I use etching cream to break the surface then scratch it up with a stone.  .

If for sure seems to be that conditioned natural glass is the preferred way to go. Of those that condition their glass who uses a stone and who uses paper?

I don't make calls but I have recieved untouched, blasted, & surfaced (etching cream?) glass pots.
All of them I have used both a stone and paper to get them the way I want them.
