Fall Gobbler with a new call.
« on: November 03, 2011, 07:32:15 AM »
I am posting this for a friend.

"Ralph,
I saw that you had posted a picture of my trumpet on Osage roost.  I commented that I was going to give it a try and let the turkeys be the judge.  Let me preface that although I have taken a fair number of turkeys in the spring I have never taken a turkey in the fall.  My total turkey hunting time this fall has been one afternoon and one morning.  The morning hunt is when I saw some action.  I set up on a hillside before dawn.  As dawn approached I gave a few soft tree yelps but got no response.  I didn't know it but there were a few turkeys roosted about 60 yards away.  They did not call but at fly down time they flew toward a field edge about 150 yards away.  Several others joined them.  Only one was strutting.  I yelped a few times and then did a lost call.  The whole flock just started my way.  When they were about 80 yards away they dropped into a depression and out of sight.  I lost callled again and in about two minutes the whole flock was on top of the hill about 25 yards away.  I managed to get a bead on the strutter and the rest is history.  I said in my comment on Osage Roost the I didn't think it was possible but that call sounds better than it looks.  The proof is in the pictures.  Thanks again.

John"

Nice job, John!  *gobble* What state were you hunting?

Although I live in NW Arkansas I primarily hunt turkeys & predators in Kansas. I am considering taking my 6 year old grandson to hunt fall turkeys & coyotes for a few days in a place I hunted deer last November in Missouri and was overrun with turkeys and called in 7 coyotes just before dark.  Had planned on Kansas with him but MO is relatively inexpensive for Non-Res ($110) for 2 tags. He attends a "year round" school and will be off 2 weeks in October.

I am not an accomplished fall turkey hunter but have taken a few in Kansas in the fall by calling at fly down time. My 16 year old grandson took his first in Kansas when I called 30+ to him off the roost and he let them get to 5 yards trying to decide how to get on the jake. I have never tried the "kee kee" and do not think I can make it but does the call you used do that well?

Thanks,

Steve/"Dermott"
