Birthday present to myself
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:03:20 PM »
What an October I have had.  I've been beat up (badly rolled ankle, two broken toes and the list keeps going on :( ) and not got to hunt as hard as I've wanted too.

Started out Friday having to work with power off on campus (again).  Power was supposed to be back on by 6, but it was 2:30 Saturday morning.  I finished my items at 3:30 and headed home.  Took a shower and out the door I went.  I did not want to miss a beautiful day in the woods.  I was dog tired, but my second wind kicked in and off we went.

Started out the morning bow hunting for deer and I missed a nice doe.  She completely hit the ground when I released my arrow.  I figure she has been shot at before.

About 10, I packed up my bow hunting gear and went and got my buddy.  We went turkey chasing.  I was pretty sure I had heard some birds fly down and we got setup.  I heard a yelp and told my partner to get ready!

I pulled out Chaos (box from Morgan) and started yelping and cutting.  About 10 minutes later, I heard them closing in.  I told my friend to be prepared.  All of a sudden I see @ 20 heads bobbing and looking for the bird.  I told my friend I'd take the 1st shot (they were on my side of shooting) and that after I shot, be prepared that I would try and call them back in.

I let my bird get about 15 yards away and dropped the hammer on her.  One bird took off and I grabbed Richard's trumpet and started cutting and yelping aggressively.  I turned that hen and at a lil under 40 yards, my friend dropped a hen!

I saw one grey phased hen in this flock, but we had no luck in drawing them back after the 2nd shot.  My buddy still has one tag left, so we may try and get back out and get him a bird!

This was the first time I've ever had a double and I was tickled to death.  One of the best hunts I've ever had in the fall.  I am so glad I went to the woods yesterday and took some much needed therapy.  I've never had any luck hunting on my bday either, so that curse is over too!

Now today we will be having a fresh meal of turkey at my parents!!!

John yes you are correct... I figured out what was wrong with that gun.  It was the choke/shell combination...  I switched chokes and now it's a shooting fool!!!  The pedals were not deploying right with my other choke...
