Took a soldier hunting
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:59:23 PM »
Went hunting this morning with a soldier up on Campbell.  We had a good morning was covered up in birds. Put some cluck and purrs on them with a box call and Zebra trumpet,  had three differnt birds gobble on the limb, didn't even know they were in there, then they pitched out and hit the ground one went into a strut and it was more than he could stand then it died. The other took out of there like raped apes.  The hen were roost higher up and I couldn't get them to come down after the shot but they sure were vocal. The reason we didn't double this morning was because I really wanted him to shoot and put him about 15 years in front of me. These were only year old birds. Neither had full fans. Mine had it's center feather shorter than the others, kind of looked like a heart. I know I am loving it. I killed the Triple beard one about 1130.  Not real exciting they never made a peep his buddy was just faster than him.  His had about 6.5 inch beard and mine are 10, 6.5, 1 7/8 with 7/8 spurs. Both weighted 15.8 pounds.  Here are a few pictures. The box is that Teak and Leopard Wood. This is the first one I have ever done and wood burning on.

I put him onto some flocked up Tom's back in the spring and he killed one 28.8 lbs with 1.5 spurs. So he ain't no rookie. He was wounded in Afgan last fall and had to return for treatment. I meet him out fall hunting. Just limping around. He has heart.  Nice guy and nice family his wife killed her first bird this past spring. Hope to get on some more next weekend.

Going to try an take another soldiers 10 year old son. I tried to put him and his dad one a nice buck last weekend but his dad set on the otherside of the corn field and watched the big 10 pointer come out where I told them to set up. He did kill a doe and a small 6 pointer. Little dude was eye balling his dad hard when he found out I told them where to sit and that big one came out. Told his dad he wanted to turkey hunt with me but I think his father should be there for the first one but we will get one before it's over. Maybe they will get his first this weekend then I get him the following weekend.
