The right latex is more important the the actual tube call. Also, learning to stretch the latex correctly is a plus.

Bingo~!!  Stretch is almost everything.  However design is a big factor too. ;)  One tip I offer for beginners...avoid the green latex and other heavy weight latex.  Start out on a white or grey thinner piece.---Jason
With the latex currently available the green is running .003 and the grey is running .004 or also .006...

Bill of bbcustomboxcalls made this great looking African Blackwood Mini Tube Caller. It looks like a good one.Check with him. I bet he will make ya one. he also make the longer models too. They range from $20.00 to $25.00
Here is an African blackwood mini tube, it is 2 1/2" long.

You should consider one of Kenny Morgans callers.  The Morgan caller has a patented design and incredibly versatile.  Kenny has videos available and he demonstrates not only how to play the call but also, more importantly, how to properly tune the call.  He has a website.
