One suggestion I have for you is before you invest money into a custom tube call, you may want to try a cheaper version like the Primos tube call to see if you like the sound and are able to create the specific calls that a tube call can make.  Then if you are comfortable with the sound and the progress you have made, then invest in a custom type tube call.  Tube calls have a unique sound and they make great clucks, jake gobbles and all the other calls that a diaphram type call can make.  Not sure if this helps you but this is my suggestion to you.  Good luck and good hunting!

I have run a tube most of my life.. IMO they are one of the most versatile and overlooked calls..

I personally prefer the smaller snuff style calls.. I actually run the old QB super snuff can that is discontinued. I like this caller due to the fact the lid snaps on to hold latex whereas some of the o ring callers I have run you feel as if you need 3 hands to change latex in the field.

This is just my opinion after running some elcheapos and some customs, but the material and construction of the tube has less effect than the tuning of the latex and the person running the call.

I'm with silverspur on this one. I've played tube calls and their not for everyone. There's info out there showing you how to build one out of a 35mm flim can and if you like them then spend the money on a custom. JMO

Mike Richard from Eau Claire Wisconsin makes an excellent tube call.  He's won many awards with his tube calls including Best of Show in the Hunting call category at Midwest Nationals.  I think that was in 2009.

Thanks for all the info.  I was looking for a good one to start out on and maybe get a better one down the road as someone suggested.  I will check out the primos.

Zumer,

I've been on dragonfly's list for years and for some reason can't get an antler tube call.  He has one sitting at home that I try and borrow everytime I visit.   ;D

His tubes are awesome along with Mclains got go wrong with either.  I would also throw in cornbread however he has backed away from the shop for a bit.

The right latex is more important the the actual tube call. Also, learning to stretch the latex correctly is a plus.

Bingo~!!  Stretch is almost everything.  However design is a big factor too. ;)  One tip I offer for beginners...avoid the green latex and other heavy weight latex.  Start out on a white or grey thinner piece.---Jason

Jason, it's hard to find anymore, but Mike Battey developed a thinner green latex some years ago. I also like the new orange latex that is used in the mouth calls. I always like to leave a bit of wrinkle in mine.

Never tried the orange but I know what latex you mean...bet it does work well.  Frank Sutliff(sp?) sells some really nice latex pre-cut in a half moon for tubes, at least he used to.
