Arkansas Gobbler
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:49:40 PM »
I decided to go this morning even though there was rain in the forecast. I was not able to go to the place I got on the big gobbler over the weekend. That was a public land hunt and my permit was only good through Sunday. I went to my farm this morning and only heard one bird but was able to call him into my Dave Smith alert hen decoy using a Jack Mincey Dogwood slate and a Steve Torman spalted Dogwood striker. This was sort of a bittersweet hunt as I am not sure there are any more gobblers on my place. Really sad time for turkey hunters in Arkansas right now. I was very fortunate to get on this ole boy. He had a paint brush 10 inch beard, 1 inch spurs, and only weighed 18 pounds. He was very skinny for a bird his size. His wing tips were completely worn off. Maybe he was able to breed some hens and pass on his genetics.

Beautiful bird and great pictures *up*

Killing a longbeard is bitter sweet to me, you hate to kill one on a private place you hunt and we all cherish those birds in our hearts.

Sounds like you are having some of those feelings described above; however remember we we are hunters and the kill is part of the experience so rejoice in your sucessful harvest.
