cutter's first break
« on: September 27, 2010, 07:55:06 AM »
hello all. i wanted cutter to break turkeys one time before the season starts oct.9th. i have been taking her to the woods every day and we have run into birds a few times but each time was in the wrong place for a puppy. many days i run her where i know we will not find birds especially when i bring the old dogs. finally sunday morning we were going up to an area that holds some birds and on the way we saw 8 or 10 hens and poults going up the side of a steep hill without much understory. we went in behind them and she picked up the scent but could not keep it straight. almost to the top i saw her get hot and watched as her head went down and away she went over the next rise out of sight. i heard her yipping in puppy fashion and birds started flying and running through the woods. i was happy to say the least. now i'll wait until we can harvest a bird for her when the season starts. need to do a little more bag training in the next two weeks and she should be ready for her initial hunt. these pups will be 5 months old the first day of the season so i'm not expecting much out of her this year but she can gain some great experience. she has been a great puppy to work with. smarter than me most days. the daily running has become a habit for her and if i do not take her she is hard to live with. in a mildly mean way i can not wait until she has spent several hours in the woods and her little butt is dragging the ground when we come home. she is just at that stage now where she is a puppy for one minute and a mature dog the next. i have had a lot of fun watching her grow. i do not know if the older dogs share this feeling. best of luck to all the fall turkey hunters out there. it is the best time of the year.

last evening the little monster was wearing down so i grabed her bag, put it over her ,flipped her over ,sipped it up and put her on the couch beside me. i think i had one "what are you doing to me,i'm a free spirit" look out of her and she was sleeping. now all i need to do is wear her down to this point before she breaks turkeys and i'll have it made. this may involve some pretty tricky timing on my part, if not i'll let my friend Ron hold her on the first break of her turkey hunting career.

Marlin love reading your stories and great to see Cutter is doing fine.  I told ole McKamey he'd better enjoy his trip up there that it will be a real learning experience.  I love fall hunting, but my hunts are nothing like yours.

I cannot believe she's already 5 months old....  how time flies!  Best of luck to you this fall and I'll be looking forward to the pics and stories!
