Fall Dog hunting...
« on: June 15, 2010, 06:08:20 AM »
Fall hunting really takes on a really neat twist, when you add a good turkey dog to the situation..

I've hunted with Marlin for a few years in the fall......The dog makes the hunt....To see them figure out the scent, then go break the birds is awesome to watch.....Birds flying everywhere, dog barking, and knowing the hunt is on.....

Kee-kee is Marlins turkey dog from John Brynes.....She has an unbelievible nose.....

Can't wait to get there again this fall..... *bannana* He's picking up a new puppy in July.......

100% agree Zumer.I would choose fall over spring anytime especially now that I have a dog. It's really fulfilling to train a dog and see all your hard work start paying off. Can't wait. *dance*

Sounds like fun. How close/far do those Byrnes dogs work to the hunters?

I've never hunted with a Byrnes dog,but I believe they would be a wider hunting dog due to the hound that's in there linage.I'm sure Zumer or some of the others would be have alot better info on this.I personnaly hunt with Brittanys,I would consider my dog and the others I've hunted with to be medium hunters.Hope this helps.

byrne dogs have a big range. when we filmed the american gun dog show at turkey trot keekee was 729 yards and going when i lost the gps signal. i stripped all my gear and went to the top of the mountain and found her busting one bird at a time out of a clear cut. in my old age i could not hear her bark at that distance so the gps lets me know where she is and if she is busting birds if i can not hear the barking. i have friends that run byrne dogs and they do not let them go more than 200 or 300 yards. it just depends on how you want to run them. these dogs are 1/2 plot hound so they have no fear of leaving you. the other thing i have noticed about these dogs is after the break. my shorthair morgan and my friends dropper turkey dog hunt much differently than the byrne dogs. with a bird dog as soon as they break birds they come back to you and then go back to the break point. with the byrne dogs they will stay at the break point putting out all runners. this only takes 10 or 15 minutes with family groups but may take 45 minutes on old gobblers. another thing i'll share is their to darn smart. by november old bull headed miss keekee knows where every flock of birds are that we have hunted over the last month or so. i have one farm i hunt that is a beautiful 3 mile walk out a ridge that breaks on both sides. at the end is a flat top that has both soft and hard mast and 8 out of 10 trips that is where we find turkeys. when i get within 3/4 of a mile of that spot i do not have to wonder where keekee is. she remembers and is gone. without the gps i would have no idea if she broke birds. with it i can tell by the map if there is the signature of a break. many people do not have country to hunt in that you could let a dog range this far. i have the worst country you could hunt fall birds in. it is to steep and sharp and if the dog breaks birds on the side of the wrong hill you just pack up and leave because they will all be together on the oppisite hill before you make the first call. the good thing is it is big country so i can run a big ranging dog. hope this helps to explain. sooner

i think the timing will be perfect. these pups will be 5 months old during the season. not old enough to be a lot of help but just the right age to get plenty of experience. i saved some gobbler wings to drag around for her and every night we will put her in a bag and set on couch to train her to stay still. other than obedience training i'm hoping that keekee and my friend gary's dogs should get her started pretty quick. in late august and sept we will be able to see hens and poults in fields so she will be turned loose on those as long as the poults are good sized. these dogs are not hard to train if you can give them constant exposure to turkeys. the real valuable traits that your after are dependant on the dog. they will either be smart enough to learn and then they become priceless or they will just be another turkey dog. either one works it is just the first kind that makes you proud to own. if she even gets close to being the dog keekee is i'll be delighted. all of my dogs are part of the family so just like people you do the best you can do and the rest is up to them. sooner

Marlin thanks for sharing some insight to training a turkey dog... I've trained beagles and helped my grandpa train coon dogs for several years.

Cannot wait to see pics of the pup in action!

Now if we can just get rid of this darn heat and let fall begin!
