How many deer hunt
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:01:37 AM »
So how many of us turkey addicted people deer hunt too?  I wish I could say I'm at BD1's level, but I'm a newb compared to him.  That dude has some awesome trophies and he earns them the hard way... Public Land.  When I see Bill's trophy wall... I drool.

Me I like deer meat.  Lately I've harvested more does than bucks.  Horns never tasted that good to me... ROTFLMBO

I'll mainly use bow season for turkey hunting, but I do have planned a bow hunt in Northern MO just for deer.  That should be a great outing.

I just never understood why my osage calls from Al won't call in a deer *stu*

I started deer hunting with my dad when I was about 8 years old. I took my first buck in Arkansas when I was 12. Back then that was a big deal since there were not a lot of deer in my area. We only had a two-week season which meant Saturdays was the only time most people had to hunt. Most of you know that I am probably the oldest member we have so far, so a lot of seasons have come and gone. I have taken deer in 5 states and in Canada with rifle, shotgun, blackpowder, pistol, and bow. The harvest number is over 200 now. I am way past seeing how many I can kill in a year. I still get excited when trying to outsmart a deer with a bow in my hands. Same excitement I get turkey hunting with any method. My family eats a lot of venison and thankfully I have a young son that does most of the shooting now. I still love deer hunting, just not as much as turkey hunting.

I think I'm turning that way too...  I just do not get as excited for deer hunting, but I sure do like eating some venison.  I'd take turkey over it any day, but still... it's goood!  *bowing*

I'd say were are getting more and more known for our bucks.  We've had Antler Restrictions in place for 4 or 5 years now and up North they grow some monsters.  I'm from Southwest MO and deer primarily feed on acorns.  Not to say you cannot harvest a nice buck, but generally North of the MO River is your best places.

Now turkey hunting, I'd take this area over any other area of MO.  We have Turkey land everywhere!

im a big supporter of antler restrictions. there was a lot of drama about it in pa.  ive seen a change forsure. i am not some antler freak but ive been passing on younger deer for  along time. just means i get to hunt longer *bannana*. and yes you have an awesome hunting state. i know a fella that goes there every spring. he hit really bad weather this year though.

This year was something else.  I harvested one and felt so lucky doing that...

Some parts of the state the birds were hot... others.. 6:15 and they were done!

I hunted Kansas the first time this year and that state has it going on too.

I enjoy deer hunting here in PA......Not near like I once did, but that is part of the aging factor...Killing a deer doesn't mean near as much as it once did. I love the taste of deer meat......

Hunting turkeys is fun.......I like fall hunting for gobblers better then spring....Being part of someone's first harvest or calling a bird in for a younger hunter, just absolutely thrills me to death. The smile tells the story and they have that memory to cherish for a long time. I've killed enough birds and really enjoy bringing other hunters to the addiction of turkey hunting.

I think I am primarily a deer hunter. Deer camp with the boys is still a big deal for me. I have pretty much retired from most forms of hunting other than deer and turkey and because of the current low population on my place seldom shoot the few turkeys I manage to call up.

My hunting stratagies have changed significantly over the last few years and I think I enjoy it more than ever.

i'm a big deer hunting fan as well.  i love venison and love the calming affect that sitting in the deer woods affords me.  i enjoy the rush of bowhunting more and plan on doing the majority of my hunting this year with bow only.  however, the gun needs to bark as well.  i hope to get a doe or two during bow season and then concentrate on going after a mature deer.

i'm an absolute scent freak as well.  some people buy it, some don't, but it gives me confidence.  i do the whole 9 yds.  shower in the morning with scent free soap, wash all clothes with scent free detergent, store all clothes in scent proof bags and don't get dressed until i am out of the truck, where rubber boots etc. and most importantly, play the wind.
