Finished Out Jawga With a Bang.....Bang
« on: May 22, 2010, 12:10:26 PM »
Well this has been an awesome season....leased 2000 acres of prime turkey habitat and had every turkey hunter's dream season for sure... I tagged out fairly early so I started taking friends to get them in on some action and put some of my calls/calling to the test....On the last weekend I brought over a buddy that had killed one earlier on our place with me this season but had only killed 2 birds his entire life counting that one. He had been experiencing some frustration on his other hunts and had no confidence in his calling so I invited him over...not to mention he helped me move to my new house the week before...so I owed him. ;D
We went out the first afternoon and set up in an area I had heard two birds working nearly all season...We ended up spotting three longbeards at 60 yds but two thick for a shot and too far I felt for most shotguns..We let them move past us and waited to hear them fly up...Then a hen came from the other direction and flew up about 50 yds from us. The longbeards flew up about 200 yds out and gobbled in the tree...We knew where to set up the next morning...We took the long way out at dark and circled the roost area and busted another hen off the roost on the other side of them..Everything was falling into place for a perfect hunt...We got out early the next morning and started our planned slip in route through some heavy cover pines to avoid the open pines the birds had roosted in.We reached our chosen set up spot and waited for the birds to wake up...They fired up right where we left them and the game began...I set Mike up for the shot and backed off and started them off with the trumpet...soft yelps and clucks..we were between them and their hen so they nailed it gobbling over each other...then I heard her fly down behind us about 150 yds back...I watched for her to come and when she showed I waved her off sending her in the other direction without a sound...the longbeards flew down and hammered well on the ground...It became obvious they were strutting in a road bed well ahead of us so I shut it down..after gobbling countless times they decided the hen was not gonna show and started heading away from us..I thought to myself, this is not happening this late in the season....I broke out a box that Lee Chadwick had brought me on a previous hunt and hit a loud series of cuts and yelps which turned those birds around...as they drew closer I worked a mouth call and slate and kept them coming...also discovered that box had a great purr on it as well...the birds gobbled at 70 yds and I shut it back down...then I saw them moving toward Mike...2 walked out in front and looked for us at 35 yds ....Mike was locked down on them..I whispered for him to wait and see the third bird..the other two turned and moved to Mike's left and behind him...he followed them with his barrel..then the third walked out front, a double beard and I whispered to Mike to take him...he slowly made his turn off the other birds and let him have it at 30 yds....Ended up being a really good bird with 10" and 10.5" thick beards..Needless to say Mike was estatic but little did he know he wasn't finished..After looking the bird over and taking pics with the phones and texting everyone he knew I decided to hit a call again to see if the other two birds were close 45 minutes later..I picked up the walnut/butternut box and ran some yelps....Bammmm!!!! a bird hammered it from the opposite direction about 200yds out...I swapped positions with Mike to face the other way..I hit the box again and the bird double gobbled at 100 yds...I told Mike to get ready he was coming fast and hard...Slipped in the mouth call and called again and he hit it every time , each time a little closer...all in all about 10 mins passed and he walked out front and center with his head up looking and boom down he went at 35 yds...I ran to the flopping bird and couldn't believe my eyes....another double beard....I thought Mike was gonna kiss me... ;D This one had a 9" and 11" beard....Needless to say this man was on top of the world this day and now he is moving to Texas so I'm gonna be gettin on some Rios.... *gobble*

Sorry Lee...Mike got your doublebeard...but I did use your call.... ;D
Dare to be different.........
