a well earned bird
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:20:03 PM »
I got up at 3 in the morning, having my morning coffee to wake up so i will be fully alert for the hunt. I left the house around 4 this morning. I got set up by 4:25 am. ;D

It's a beautiful morning, the birds were singing. The turkeys started gobbling. I heard a gobble around 5 this morning, and another one right behind him. I also heard another gobble about 15 yards in front of me. I was like OMG! :o

I was set up right on his roost. He gobbled about 30 times. Next, thing is i hear is silent, for some reason they stopped gobbling. The other 2 birds were going nuts gobbling at everything they heard.

I bet they gobbled 100 times or better. This bird in front of me was doing nothing. I was thinking to myself "Where the heck did the turkey be at" He starts gobbling at 5 this morning and stopped at 5:20 and not another sound from him.

I didn't hear him fly down or fly away, which you would think you would of heard something.

Well, now its 7 am and still nothing. I pick up my trumpet that Black Falcon made me for my birthday. Thank you Dave!! ;D

I threw a few clucks out. I heard a gobble about 150 yards to my right. I called again about 5 min later to hear another bird.

I didn't hear nothing yet, so I picked up my Whitt long-box and threw a few yelps and BANG !!!!. There, he goes again.

So, now about 20 min pass and nothing, just these 2 birds at the bottom going nuts.

Just to let you know. I had problems with these turkeys before. They will come in about 35 to 45 yards and just hang up. So you can't see them cause there down in this draw bottom. Where it's thick as heck. You can only see up to 20 yards or so. I need a second person doing the call or the shooting. I don't care who gets these birds. I'm out for REVENGE on them !!!!! Plus, the weather didn't help it either. :-[ :-[

It's about 7:33 in the morning and haven't heard nothing yet. I decided to go to another land where I hunt also.

I'm getting ready to go too another hunting grounds, but before I leave. I figured, I would call one more time on the trumpet again and BAM!! The bird is coming in from behind me just to my right. ;D

I was about to leave but, for some reason I decided to look over to the right and I saw him. I knew It's going to be hard for me to get turned around to get a better shot at him. He was about 75 yards away and about 10 yards off the wood line. I turned my body slowly and I got 3 tall weeds in my way. I can't see my front bead, so I have to pick the gun barrel up over them.

I get the barrel over the weeds and pointed in the clearing. I cut to get into the spot where I'm setting up at. Now the tom is at 15 yards to the right and coming in. He stepped into the clearing and he's about 20 yards away. I shoot and that's the end of this birds wonderful day. :D :D :D

The bird weigh was 23 pounds
11 inch beard
right leg 1 1/4 spur
left leg1 1/2 spur
and had only 2 toes on his right foot

Well this is a well deserved bird. I had the NC crew here and wanted to make sure they got birds. So, now when they left. I could get mine. ;D ;D

Ray, congratulations!!! I know you worked hard for that one, some would have given up, but persistence does pay, that is one fine gobbler! I think I am as excited as you are to finally see that gobbler taking a dirt nap, lol, I know he tortured you for a spell!
Snagged a couple of your pics for the website, I can't believe I never took a picture of that trumpet, but you got one better than what I would have, and that's how I like to see them, next to a fine gobbler,, Way to go buddy!!
