Question for the diseased call collectors
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:29:00 PM »
Guys,
sitting here pondering things about call collecting and well, was wondering how your call collecting got out of hand?  Lets face it, for many of us its long been outta hand ;D

I started collecting calls back when I was a kid and the reason I continued to keep buying then is much the same today.  I was in search of the perfect call, as described only by my ear.  Though I have found and own many supreme sounding calls, I continue to "wonder" what else may be out there, knowing now and full well there is no such call.  But I carry on with thoughts of.... maybe this wood combo or that wood combo, a call in this tyle or that style, made by this person or that person...  You get the point.  I wonder if I will ever stop, be completely satisfied...I doubt it.  So I guess it really is an addiction, fascination of wonder.  So lets hear from others on their Disease of call collecting.---Jason

Yeah I'm not sure how my addiction occurred, but I do think I'm one of one on why I collect calls :)  Osage is my passion...  I vision my house and everything inside it built from Osage.

My first custom call came 3 years ago with my first box from the SS boys.  Then I joined some forums and then knew I was in deep deep trouble :)

Al's first set of Osage calls for me hooked me from day one.  I've loved that sound ever since.  I probably have 30 to 50 boxes with Osage in it :)

I love that Osage twang...  I have 3 all Osage boxes and I cherish them dearly.  It's not very often you can get someone crazy enough to build an all Osage call!

Right now I've run out of space to put my calls and I'm thinking of what I can get rid of to make more room  ROTFLMBO  To me, each call is a work of art...  Some I have the same wood combo multiple times (keep convincing myself I'll take one hunting)...  Once you make the friendships with the callmakers, it's hard not to keep buying :)

I'm not really a collector, although I picked up a few callers in trade years ago..But, THANK GOD FOR ADDICTED COLLECTORS.. if it weren't for you guys us call makers would have no real incentive to keep making caller after caller chasing that elusive "perfect sound"...but I think call making is just as addictive as collecting...once you start that chase for a better caller you just can't quit experimenting... and on top of that you want it to look pretty..and that leads to a life in the woodshop eating sawdust from about every type of tree that grows or has grown...Heck, I don't know if I'm feeding collectors/hunters addiction or feeding my own addiction to making the cotton-pickin things  ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO

Excellent point Charlie! It is a sweet hobby/trade/need! I love the hunting with um, building um, and can't get enough of them!
