Fall season wrap up
« on: November 01, 2016, 08:04:12 PM »
Trying to wrap up my fall turkey season here in WV and with some quality deer and small game hunting still ahead, here is the rundown.  Now its not all about turkeys but more about good times in the fall woods.  So you can skip to the pics below or just read on....

One of the highlights of my season is hunting with my niece Kate.  She is learning leaps and bounds and just doesn't know the word quit.  We hunted on several different occasions and got birds in front of her several times.  For her own reasons she chose to hold off and not shoot.  Later, she was regretting those decisions abit but I simply told her that the first decision is usually the right one. We want birds in hand, not birds lost in the wild woods.  Even with no birds brought home I think she did great (but coming from an uncle what do you really expect! LOL)  Be we did bring home some game for her to practice here culinary skills...she is an excellent cook!!

Got to hunt with West Augusta some (AKA Steve) and he has already posted about that.  It was a really great day.  We used a bunch of different calls over the hunt but the one that really tore the birds up the most and really got them cranking was a ceramic pot which he built.  Here are a couple more pics of Mr. Steve and his bird

My turkey hunting buddy and travel companion Joe R. also did well this fall.  After many chases and almosts, several very nice LB's came to the gun.  I was thrilled when he told me he called them in with a longbox I made for him last year.  Note the sticker on the butt of the gun.  This is the infamous SWARP GUN of DEATH (SGD)!  Hard to tell how many gobbies have met there match at the business end of that one but it is considerable.

I was privileged to help out with another hunt this fall for Wounded Warriors / Hunt of a Lifetime / Wheeling Sportsman.  We had hunters of all ages and many different states.  Last year we managed 4 bears and 10 deer if memory serves correctly.  This year we didn't bring in any bears but did much better on deer overall with several nice bucks taken.  And a couple turkeys to boot.  I think a great time was had by all!  Its really sad tho when you realize that some of those present at this hunt may very well not be with us for future hunts.  If you have an opportunity to get involved with stuff like this please do....you won't regret it.

One of my favorite little hunting buddies.  Brodie.  This kid is just way to cool! Yes, we had some fishing opportunities along the way as well.

Finally, I managed to stagger around and get in front of a nice 1 1/2 year old bird.  I try to tell myself that the little stabilized crotch butternut trumpet I made helped but......mite be wishful thinking!  LOL!  As he fell and me trying to do an old man selfie! LOL!

And lastly, this is how I seem to spend a lot of time in the fall.....feel like a kiddo again.....love it!!
