A Zeiss Victory/Conquest 3-9 x 40 runs about $550-600.  You can do better, check out Optics Planet. $499 Delivered.  Its over your budget, but a lot of scope for the buck..

If your looking at Leupold, check out Manventure Outpost.  I just got an unbelievable deal on a scope for a custom Weatherby Safari rifle I'm having built.

custom weatherby, that sounds nice.  what caliber did you go with?  the $500 price tag is a bit high, especially since this is going on the backup gun.  but i'll surely check out manventure outpost, i wouldn't mind having a vx II on that gun.

thanks for the links.

I've got a left handed Euromark coming from the custom shop chambered in the .416 Weatherby Magnum.  I'm going to top it off with a small variable Leupold VX-3.  Should make for a fine varmint gun... ;D

ROTFLMBO   i think most varmint's would be smaller then your cartridge.

A Leupold VX-II 3-9 x40 in black matte is $259 plus S&H at Manventure Outpost.  They charge a bit for shipping but cant be beat on price.  They are out of stock but OpticsPlanet has a price match guarantee, I'd work that angle if the scope interests you and you arent willing to wait...

That is a great price for that scope. For the money, Leupold and Nikon are unmatched!

wiltnucs,

I also shoot left-handed and all my centerfire rifles are left-handed bolt actions. I have 5 Weatherby rifles. One is a German Weatherby 7MM that was restocked by Brown Precesion and teflon coated many years ago. It has a German 3X9 Zeiss on top. I have carried this rifle in several states and Canada and taken lots of deer and elk with it. It is hard for me to pick between the German Zeiss and Swarovski as far as quality optics go. You cannot appreciate the difference until you use one of the high end scopes.

This will be my third Weatherby rifle, my first was the Ultralightweight LH in .300 WBY w/Swarovski 4.5-12 x 50, I then followed up with the Ultralite in .257 WBY scoped with a comparable Zeiss.  The .257 is great, but I prefer the .300... I have an older Weatherby Orion O/U that is a clay shooting machine.  The .416 WBY will likely be my last one for a while...

You should be equipped with those three rifles to hunt anything that walks. I have 257, 270, 7MM, 300, and 300 Wby Magnum rifles. The 257 is built on a Sako action.
