Alabama Limbhanger
« on: April 19, 2015, 11:27:55 PM »
Well, it has been a rough season for me, with few birds talking for weeks now.  Saturday was the exception to this lull.  I did a soft call on the Ghostmaker glass over slate, and that's all it took to get them started.  I heard at least one down in the bottom near the lake, so I ran through the pines and posted up near where I still heard them gobbling in the trees.

I found the area I like down there and ran my Ebony/Holly from Albert Paul, and they sounded off.  I got one more series in before I could tell he was on the ground and too close to do any more calling (I only heard one gobbling now).  One came sneaking up through the gap, and I heard the gobbling turkey sound off down near the water.  I could see my turkey hiding behind some brush/trees trying to find the hen that was me, and another gobbler was sneaking up that same path when that turkey near the water sounded off again.

Something (foolish) inside me wanted to wait on that gobbling turkey to come in, but I snapped out of it and let the lead bird have a head full of lead when he stepped out from behind the tree at 30 steps.  Man, am I glad I did, because he has a nice set of hooks on him - a real limbhanger! Thanks Ed and Mr. Paul for breaking this lull that's been killing me!

1 1/4" each, Dave!  I wish I could get back in there after that gobbling brother of his, but unfortunately the water is rising fast!
