5- 5-2014 ..Some days just stand out more than others, and this was one of those days. Aaron was on a quest to harvest his first gobbler with his bow. On several occasions, we had one or more gobblers come in silently, on the wrong side, etc, gobblers that could have been taken relatively easily, if there is such a thing, with a shotgun. We could see this was going to be quite an accomplishment if we could get it done. One morning I had a fine gobbler pass by me heading straight to Aaron, I held off to see how it played out and Aaron never had a shot. He was somewhat irritated with me wondering why I hadn't taken the shot, but his mission had become mine as well.
The next morning, we located several gobblers and I called with a trumpet and was finally answered by a hearty gobble. I called and soon had more than one gobbler responding, but they didn't seem to be coming any closer. Finally I saw two gobblers and could see that they had hens with them. They were strutting as the hens pecked away.. About this time, Aaron walked over to me and I motioned him to get down since I could see the gobblers from where I was. I asked him if he could make it out to the edge of an opening in front of us without getting busted. He made it there and I called with my hen box and he answered me with the long box. The turkeys started moving our way, and I couldn't move to call as they were too close. Now the turkeys were 30 yards in front of me and Aaron was still calling, and I was getting worried, "Didn't he realize how close they were?" They double gobbled and Aaron drew his bow and released an arrow.... turkeys scattered...I putted with the box call, hoping they might make another mistake. Well..next thing I see is Aaron standing up and gives me the fist pump signal . He made his way over to me and I asked what happened, and he said he saw his arrow pass completely through. He decided to go after them and soon I see Aaron coming back with a nice gobbler slung over his shoulder.
We've had a lot of great hunts together, but this was one that stands out. He was so excited..5 gobblers had passed in front of him at 20 yards, just like the day he took his first turkey. What a beautiful sight to see and a great day to be in the turkey woods....an emotional thing as well afterwards as we thanked the good Lord above and my Dad looking over our shoulders...
