1st Fall Turkey Hunt
« on: October 31, 2014, 07:00:36 AM »
The MD fall turkey season starts tomorrow 1 Nov. and it's the first fall hunt that I've taken. Any advise? I won't be using dogs.

If you don't know or can't find their roost. Look for feeding areas or if you find a flock on the ground, run into them and bust them up.....then sit for 30 minutes then start calling....soft yelps and kee kees or an occasional assembly call.

Thanks Bill and Mike. If I ran through the woods barking I would probably be the one getting shot. Lol!

I was thinking about that also. I do have a question that I've been pondering though... what's the point in busting the flock?

Tom Turpin's book, Hunting The Wild Turkey, gives some good advice on fall hunting. Turkeys like to be in a flock, so when you bust them, it's only natural that they want to re-group. When you bust them, just make sure they go in every direction. If they all go in one direction, then you've just drove them farther away from you and they'll re-group there instead of where you busted them. Most of the old timers, such as Turpin, Davis and Johenning, had rather fall hunt than spring hunt.

Chris , I agree...why bust up a flock. I know that turkeys like to reassemble but I d rather not spend time locating them just to scare the heck out of them. I prefer to hunt the flocks just like springtime in the sense that you set up early in known roosting areas. As they wake up in the fall they are very talkative and can be easy to locate if you know your hunting area. Call sparingly when they are in the tree but lay it on em when they are on the ground. Lots of yelping and keeing. Good luck.

Turkeys are use to being harassed in the woods. Busting a flock up isn't detrimental to them....unless of course you kill one.. ::) A busted flock is far more vocal than a flock, together. If you don't want to waste shells just run into them yelling.

No joy after 3 days of hunting mountainous terrain. We did get on a flock of hens and found an area that they roosted in. Unfortunately they didn't get the memo as to how they were suppose to come in and we got busted. I now understand the advantage of busting the flock. In the flock they didn't respond to calls and they were quiete most of the time. Awesome experience though. Plan to go back next year. I'm hooked on fall hunting! Thanks for the help and info.
