Antler open reed/closed reed combo
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:44:21 AM »
Here is a very special and unique call, it is a Whitetail antler which features an open reed distress and enclosed reed, two in one call. The open reed portion is made from Warthog tusk Ivory. I don't use a jig, all my tone boards are cut by hand and shaped for the sounds I want to get out of the call. There is also a JC Reed in the enclosed reed portion for ease of use by someone not experienced with open reed calls. This call (open reed)will do coyote barks, yips, pup in distress, rodent and rabbit distress and even bird sounds on the tip with practice, the enclosed reed can be voiced to suit, is now cotton candy. The lanyard bead is also Ivory with  scrimmed tracks.
Thanks for looking, Dave

Mike, you are going to make my head swell, but I guess the wood will keep me humble. As you know, I ruined some calls yesterday, was successful with two of them, and then I worked on a trumpet from 6pm-11pm. I finished it, parted it off and turned it around to work on the inside of the bell end,and then split it. That I was disappointed would be an understatement, it was a gorgeous call,Texas ebony with amazing figuring and I was only about five minutes from the finish line. Like Al says, making some firewood!!!
Thanks guys!

Thats a cool idea.  RkLu I hate having 2 calls banging together on my lanyard everytime I drop one or as I move through the woods.

Wonder if you could do 2 different open reed calls in one instead of the open and closed. A howler like you got than something like a verminator tweety on the other tine would be a sweet call.

I'm sure you could do that with the right piece of antler, I have some antler coming, may have to try it!
Thanks for the positive comments everyone!
