Lathe dust collection
« on: April 02, 2014, 05:57:33 PM »
Any of you turners use some sort of dust collection on your lathe? I've tried several different ways to catch my shavings but none have really been worth the effort. Post up some pics if you can.

Dave, I made one out of 1/4" plywood and found you need a pretty big hose to do much, going to try 4 "
Here is one Rockler has that looks like a better solution  http://www.rockler.com/lathe-dust-hood
Google lathe dust collection hood and you will see a lot of other systems

I gave up on a hood.  Without a horse of a system it just won't pull shavings very well any distance from the hose inlet. Doesn't seem to matter to much about the hood design for me.  So I rigged up an arm from an old drafting lite and have the 4" hose on it and I can position it close to the work piece.  It gets a lot of the big shavings and pretty much all the respirable stuff which is really what concerns me most.

I wear an MSA respirator and have a dust pan and broom.  I do need some new filters.  *lol*
