A long time coming
« on: March 21, 2014, 03:04:26 PM »
After going all year last year without firing a shot, I was finally able to get a good one this morning!
I eased the truck thru the gate in the predawn darkness without the headlights on, loaded my gun, and gathered my stuff together, and started in to my tree...I set Henryetta in the plot and sit down to await daylight in a small blind I made last saturday. After a short wait, the first gobble came and then another and another. I must have walked by them on the way in, because they were roosted close to the gate, and truck! When it got the right time, I let out a few soft yelps. They seemed to like it because I was answered by a double gobble...A few minutes later I gave a flydown and they cut me off! I shut up and waited for the gobblers to fly down!....It took a while because of a dog barking a couple of hundred yard away...They finally flew down and gobbled!... That's when I got out my bloodwood slate that I made this year, and gave a few louder yelps and clucks. They double gobbled and I got my gun ready...A few minutes later, a hen came in, and pecked my decoy...She didn't like that and started running away, and took flight. Thank goodness she didn't fly toward the gobblers...I didn't move...five minutes had passed when I caught movement to my right...close too!...thank goodness I already had my gun up and was ready...I could tell that he didn't seem to like the decoy too much...He strutted for Henryetta, but she was unimpressed...He came out of strut and took a step...When I had his head in the clear, I put the bead on his head, and pulled the trigger! BANG! FLOP!       Three beards 10 inch - 8 3/4 inch - 7 1/2 inch   Spurs 1 3/8    Weight 20.9
WOW! What A hunt!...It was great!...Everything seem to go right for me this morning, and I am so thankful for a successful hunt!
