Poplar for paddles?
« on: November 02, 2013, 11:03:25 PM »
I reclaimed about a dozen poplar boards from one of my old barns and it's about 80 to 100 y/o. I also have quite a bit of old walnut. I don't see many or any calls with poplar lids and walnut boxes. You see that in reverse quite a bit. Can someone tell me why poplar isn't used for call paddles? If it works I wanted Tim Bullock to make me a long box.

Thanks Bryan

I've got a all walnut box from Albert Paul that is a great call. I've seen the Shadetree use poplar for a paddle... Sounded really good also. I bet Tim could build ya a fine call out of just about anything. I'd order a all walnut Longbox from him if I was you. I highly recommend a all Osage long box from McKamey also. JMO. Hope this helps!!

PS. I've heard SS builds a fine All walnut Longbox too...  *cheers*

The older poplar seems to be a lot harder with time.  It might make something on a softer wood like cedar.  Poplar on walnut would be a challenge I think.  But there are some callmakers around here that are up to I am thinking.......... :)

One thing that you may wanna try is using...With much poplar are I've cut up Ive found that the sap wood is very hard compared core, but the grain is extremely straight and I would think it would make great Paddle stock. the color is a creamy white and would be a great contrast in color to the yellow poplar or even (MSP) mineral stained poplar
