Ohio Gobbler #2
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:20:48 PM »
I was able to make it back to my favorite honey hole a few days after I filled my first tag . I took my bow with me on this hunt and was prepared for a day long hunt if necessary . Instead it was a Waffle House morning with a tag filled as the sun was just breaking the horizon . I slipped in to a small cedar thicket on the edge of a pasture which borders a powerline . Right at 6 am the birds started gobbling in all directions and I was set up near 4 gobblers and a jake bird . Today the hens decided to do alot of talking and 3 of them carried the morning conversation for an hour on the limb while the gobblers hammered and came to them . Knowing that the hens were controlling the action, I decided to not call until they had left their perches , and as soon as they did one of the gobblers broke off with them while two others lit the woods up but would not budge from their strut zones. I took advantage of the gobbling to get closer and found a great set up behind a blow down . Just a few soft yelps on the shortbox was all it took to raise the curiosity of the nearest gobbler . I could see him through the brush as he approached my set up in full strut . At 25 yds , he stepped out from behind a tree and I was already at full draw , sitting on my knees and the Rage split his chest before he could retreat . This bird weighed in at 23.5 lbs had spurs that both measured right at 1 1 /2''  and his beard was  11 7/8 ''  . It was a great day to be in the woods and my tag was on by 7:15a.m. To top it off , I ran into a patch of morels and filled my sack in about 30 minutes . Now I'm out of tags and dealing with the turkey hunting withdrawal . Thanks for listening !
