A GREAT DAY hunting with Steve
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:16:12 PM »
Well, another day is logged in memory. Today found us again with plans of hitting two states. Steve took the day off so we lit out together. I had a really good hunt and managed to take a really good bird. He held tight with 5 hens for along time in a filed in front of me gobbling at my longbox and Buice's trumpet. I had to play the waiting game and as the hens started wandering away--he finally committed to the gun. He had 11" beard and whopping 1 3/8" spurs.
The best hunt by far was Steve's as I was with him all the way. We had been set up on a bird that circled us and lost interest and left us silent, when we dropped off a ridge into a cut cornfield thats HUDGE and lays on the Elk River. We heard a bird that was gobbeling his head off at 1 oclock in the afternoon. The only problem was that he was in a ox bow in the river at the far end of the field over 3/4 mile or so,and we knew the bird was across the river  *wha*. Steve was INSISTANT we walk 3/4 miles in corn stubble MUDDY field with 10 lbs of extra mud on our boots after walking miles already during the day. There was NO STOPPING Steve from trying this bird >!!. I argued with him every step of the way that we would get there and the bird would gobble like crazy, loose interest and walk off---leaving us with a dreadful muddy walk back. There was no stopping Steve from going---I belly ached and complained the whole way betting him it would never happen.I even went as far as to tell him that the student was leading the teacher and wouldnt listen >!!....he was hard headed and wouldnt hear my argument. We stopped a few times in a wide open field and hit him with the longbox and he hit every time. We got to the ox bow and set up. He went beserk. He got quiet and I told Steve to get his gun up and he either walked off(like I told him would happen time and time again on the walk) or he had flown the river. A soft trumpet yelp, and it affirmed --he was on our side. I was astonished and amaized. The bird appeared and walked straight to Steve's Gun. It is one of those hunts I will never forget as I sure pushed my thoughts on the odds of it even being a REMOTE possibility. Steve taught me a lession yesterday. The entire walk back -all he heard from me wan I cannot believe this just happened---I can't still believe it. It was a great hunt, and one I will ALWAYS remember.

Ya know I have heard of tall tales about turkeys flying over a creek, or river, but usually they KNOW THEY GONNA GET A LIL SOMETHIN SOMETHIN :o :o ROTFLMBO, for teal, but we are talking about TURKEYS are we not, so are we really to believe this gobbler actually flew the river just to die for ole Snakeboots and his friend Steve, when the dang guy already has 9, 12, or 13 some gobblers this season alone??  Well, who ya gonna call to bring that bird to the gun SNAKEBOOTS, say what, I said who ya gonna call to bring that bird to the gun, SNAKEBOOTS  Man I have heard it all now....a dang gobbler in the middle of the afternoon flying a river cause the fool ain't got nothing else stupid to do *bannana* *bannana* *lol* *lol*

What can I say Jeff and Steve, this is one for the memory books, congrats guys!!
