SC Low Country Hunt
« on: March 25, 2013, 05:39:20 PM »
Took a road trip down to visit and hunt with the Low Country Gobbler.  The morning did not yield any action so we moved to another spot in the afternoon where the landowner had seen birds that morning.  Turned out there was not much place to hide ourselves so we did the best, backing up to a clump of bushes.  Hens started to come into the field from all directions.  One fed to within a few feet of our setup,  giving some low clucking to the LCG.  Two long beards came to just within range but we passed on them since they did not want to challenge my home made strutting jake decoy, making us believe something better might show.  Not ten minutes later I saw the top of a fan coming our way above the dry grass clumps.  He stepped out into the field, full of attitude, and headed for the jake.  Almost to the decoy I was able to bring him half way out of strut and let the hammer down.  I was told no transferred birds have been introduced to this area and that these birds are originals of the swamps.  They have small heads, and darker appearance than what I am used to seeing.  Mine took a load of sixes to the head which gave it an odd appearance, after the blood rushed to it.
