Georgia opener---the smokepole roared
« on: March 23, 2013, 02:17:41 PM »
Almost stayed in bed this morn as it started raining late last night and wasnt supposed to let up till afternoon. Woke up on my own at 5am --and couldnt stay in bed. Been listening to a gaggle of longbeards in N. Ga on a friends farm that I call-"where the buffalo roam" .
With the rain, i really didnt want to go in there and bust em up wityhout a show and try to get it video'd. But I couldnt stay in bed. I left my vest and grabbed a glass, two strikers, and a Buice trumpet fir the wet weather and set out.
The birds had been roosting above a field the runs into the mountain, so I chose to get up at the top of the field closer to em. As ya know it---when flydown came---they were down at the bottom @ 350 yds from me. 1 longbeard,3 jakes and 7 hens. They wouldnt do anything but stand around. Knew it was going to be a waiting game. Sat tight, and finally a hen got started so I jumped on her. We went back and forth and the gobbler let one fly, and suddenly one sounded off up the hill with me. It was on  *bannana*.
The Buice yelper did the trick---soft yelped him right into my lap when a swarm of Nitro's dropped him fast. He looked great and DRY until I shot. He flopped down the hill in the woods and ended up in the field soaken wet. He had 1" spurs and 10 1/2" beard. The ole glass of Glenn Marrer's and Steve's black death played a part in this hunt also---thanks guys for the calls
