Winchester to unlesh a new rim fire...
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:17:30 PM »
In April of 2013, Winchester will introduce a new rim fire, called the 17 Winchester Super Mag. It will feature three bullet offerings,   a 20-grain plastic tip in the Varmint HV (High Velocity) line, 25-grain plastic tip in the Varmint HE (High Energy) line and a 20-grain jacketed hollow point in the legendary Super-X line. At 3,000 feet per second it’s the fastest modern rim fire cartridge on the planet.

Me too! I already have one ordered and plenty of ammo. Last time someone tried a fast rim fire, (Remington) it was a flop (5 m/m) and ammo became very hard to find!

Yeah, I have a friend who had a 5mm.  Finally got disgusted and sold it.

What about the 17 HMR?  I would say that it is a huge success.

The 17HMR is a very accurate cartridge, as long as the wind is not blowing.  I'm sure this new .17 will be equally subject to wind drift.

At 3000 fps, it won't drift like its' slower cousin.

I've shot the 17 HMR a lot and on calm days and windy days.  It isn't affected by the wind as much as expected. Now I'm talking at ranges out to 125 yards. About as far as I shoot on woodchucks. For prairie dogs I'm sure you could shoot quite abit farther and then the wind would come into play more.

Supersonic ammo develops what is known as a "mach cone" that travels along with it, and that makes it cross-section to the wind larger, and it will get more drag than subsonic projectiles. Accuracy suffers most in the trans-sonic range (.9-1.1 mach).  After that, I'm not sure how much more or less drift you would have, but you are probably right, Bill.

Too technical for me Tom....LOL! What I do know, is that the longer a bullet is in flight or the longer it takes to get to its intended POI, the more effect wind and gravity has on it.   *cheers*

Bill, in your opinion, what was the "flop" with the 5 m/m remington, was it speed or hard to find shells or was the hmr 17 just that much better ?thanks, Lonnie

The 5 m/m had one problem.....Remington made the cases to thin at the base and because the round was so hot, it would break the rim off from the case. Causing you to have to pry the case from the chamber. Later............much later, the Old Scrounger had several lots of ammo made that would hold the pressure. Unfortunately, most of the guns were trashed or people went to another round they didn't have difficulties with. I kept two 5 m/m rifles...one clip fed and the other is tube fed. Using the ammo from the Old Scrounger, I have had not one problem w/ either rifle. I really glad I stocked up on the ammo several years back! Stocked up..........LOL.......ten bricks!

The 5 m/m is a .20 cal. unlike the 17 HMR and does offer more punch and range. Although the 17 HMR is a tad faster than the 5 m/m, at 150 yds the 17 has 99 foot pounds of energy, while the 5 m/m has 165 fpe. The 17  is loaded w/ a 17 gr bullet (for comparison) vs the 5 m/m w/ a 38 gr, bullet. Both use basically the same case.

Bill, thanks for the info there, so it was more of an ammo failure on REMS fault than that of the firearm itself ?I have never seen one and that was why I asked, personally, I find my .22 WMR to be all the rimfire I've ever needed, but its nice to stay informed on the new stuff, its almost a full time job to keep up with it all. MAKES ME WONDER,and perhaps you can start a poll on it or something, if you had one rimfire and ONE only, what would it be and in what rifle would you have it chambered for ? , thanks for all, Lonnie

Well, for what it's worth........the 22 LR has taken as much game as any rim fire around. Folks around here (poachers) use it for deer. I've taken game ranging from coyotes to squirrels w/ it. There are bigger and faster, but even police fear it because it can pass through Kevlar.

I got a email from Winchester on it yesterday it is a interesting little gun personally I will stick with the 220 swift. You can load it up or down with a variety of bullet weights.
