Our modern gun season opened up monday and we have been hitting it hard . The weather has been perfect so far and the deer are on their feet moving alot . We stayed in the cabin, near the lake this week and had a great time as usual . On opening morning I could hear deer on the ridge above me , chasing and grunting but they never came into sight . So for the afternoon hunt I moved my stand further uphill and was able to watch 3 bucks chasing 2 does just out of range of my Thompsen Center. After watching them for awhile , the chase moved on but I knew there was at least one hot doe in the area right now . Tuesday morning found me back on stand hoping the deer would make another appearance . First light brought a group of does by me at 75 yds and as I watched a young buck followed them right under my stand . At about 8:30 a.m. I caught a glimpse of a buck coming in behind me . I knew right away that this buck was going to ride home with me if I had the opportunity . I dropped to my knees in my treestand and used the climbing rail to rest my .50 cal. and squeezed off a shot . The buck was hit good and dropped in his tracks , making the track real easy . I drug the buck , treestand , backpack and muzzleloader down to a farm field where we could pick it up with the 4 wheeler . The buck dressed out at 200 lbs and will be very good table fare for this winter . The deer has 11 points and both brow tines are broken from fighting . When I got back to the farm , I just didn't have the energy left to load the buck on the Trail Blazer so one of the farm hands helped out by loading the deer in the bucket of his front loader and raised it up onto the vehicle where I slid it out on top and lashed it down . That's the way to load one up for sure ! Another great gun week is almost behind us now as I am sharpening my broadheads today for an afternoon doe hunt . Good luck to all of you that make it out this deer season ! Thanks for listening .
Bob
