Time with one of the old timers
« on: October 28, 2012, 04:16:18 PM »
Spent some time in the mountains and had to stop by and spend a few hours with one of the old timers. A fellow Georgian. Came away with a few callers.

I ended up with a dark phase black and white ebony screw in. Number 2,3, and 4 mouth piece. Billy is also making a call out of that secret wood I had bought. He has a striped walnut that Ive got eyes on and another piece of wood he hasnt turned yet that I may get a fourth one out of. He is a great man and call maker. I highly enjoyed my trip and Im even more excited that my son got to meet and spend time with him. One thing is for sure, we arent on this earth forever. thats a special memory for my son for sure.

Here are some videos of my scratcher and trumpet with #3 then #2 mouth piece

I put some more pictures of the trip and videos from Billys shop in the call collectors section. I had a blast, was asked to pick out a few trumpets for others. here are the other four no longer available from Billy.

6 inch Olive wood

6 inch, 200 year old fence post osage, 6.5 inch osage, and 6 inch desert iron wood.

Sweet Del. But I guess I am a little offended about you talking about the "Old Timers." I guess though that is what all of us wish for.

I would love to visit Billy and Lonnie Sneed. I believe a guy could learn more in a couple days wirh those guys than a lot of people gather in years.

Ricky its a trip to make. Next year im taking a week off and carrying the gun. The cabin we stayed in butted up to a WMA. Had deer and bear in the yard several days. The first afternoon we had 12 deer in the yard. Rifle season is in for both.

PS....you may get to run that olive wood in the near future.

Wow, what a great day you and your son had Del...did anyone else notice the dozens of trumpets he had in waiting in the pic  *bannana*and the 100 or more box call blanks sitting on the self....Ole Billy doesn't slow down much.  Congrats Del on your new collection from Mr. Buice.

I'm just a bit jealous of this trip you took to Billy's shop Del. With all that "Eye Candy" laying around I hope Billy got you checked out before you left his place. But it looks like has plenty more turkey tooters to go around so I might just have to get me another soon. Nice looking Black and White Ebony trumpet you got, congrats to you and I bet your son enjoyed the trip too.

Del, I know ya'll had a good time. I don't think one could make that trip and not. Mr. Billy is one of the most pleasant people to be around. He has a wealth of knowledge about calls and callmakers, past and present. It is a real pleasure to go somewhere and be able to play so many different calls. My only regret was that I didn't get one of his scratchboxes too. You don't stay in business for 45 years without knowing your stuff.

Billy makes some nice calls indeed, one of the true craftsman of the trade.  You can tell he really enjoys building his calls and sharing his knowledge after you have had the chance of meeting him.  I had the opportunity of meeting him in 03 and his smile is still as full as ever.  Thanks for sharing the visit, pics and clips Del.
