Well......this day marked the first ever fall hunt here in my home county. A constant hunting partner and great friend decided to ring it in. We closley guard his farm. Its a turkey haven loaded with birds. Usually, its the place we take the kids to get a great experience.
We have a few smokie grey hens that we have guarded for years, hoping that one day one of them would throw off a colored gobbler. After 7 years with one of them, its never happened. So, we decided this fall, we would see if we could add one to the trophy room. We set out this morn, great clear, but as soon as the birds started talking on the limb, the fog set in. Things went really quiet and so did we. Around 9:30-10:00, we finally saw a group that we persuaded to committ to us. Ended up they were all 5 young jakes that didnt even have a bow tie to the eye. Aubie watched em long enough that when they were at about 30 yds, he decided he wanted to make one a victim..especially when they cranked up and started gobbeling,or trying to . I talked him out of it as they will be next seasons actors. They graced our prescence for nearly 1/2 hour or so and they ambled off. We called frequently just advertising. Then suddenly a hen kee kee'd. We sprang to attention. The ole longbox came out and after three kees....they were there. One special canditate was in the mix. Aubie and I wanted to try to double but it just wouldnt happen. He turned me loose and I didnt hesitate. Got this really pretty smokie grey hen thanks to my buddies generiousity. Its headed to the taxidermists !!!!
