long ways today

Most of you know I doubled up today on one shot, but here's the kick butt story

Started the morning out getting

on by a tom. It's a good thing I'm a law abiding hunter or that bird would have taken a dirt nap off the roost

Anyways messed with that tom for about 2.5 hours and realized he wasn't coming in. He had some other place in mind. I still think I spooked him when he first gobbled.
So I went and decided to check the back field. Low and behold there was a mess of birds!! I came up with a game plan and backed out. I was going to get in front of them and call them up the hill.
I hurried as quickly as I could. I made a quick setup against a big oak and had several cedars in front of me.
I started out with my hornstra trumpet and gave some clucks and yelps. I heard them respond. I could not see them as their was a knoll in front of me. I yelped again and they responded. I then switched over to my Hudson Hen box. I cut and yelped on it.. they responded again. I sat the call down and waited. After about 15 minutes I didn't see nor hear them. I picked up the box and yelped and they responded again. I then gave out a loud cluck and put the box down. The field erupted and I could hear them running toward me. In no time I had 20+ birds in my lap.
I waited for one to break formation and get in front of the other ones. I had her lined up and clicked the safety off and let the 12 gauge roar. I was tickled to death watching her take a dirt nap! Then I noticed something flopping behind her

Yelp two birds in one shot. I'm glad in MO you are able to take both birds on the same day. Never done a 2 for 1 before, but my season ended really quick. Now I'll have to do the honey do lists

One mature hen and a jenny. Gave the farmer the hen and will deep fry the jenny for Thanksgiving!
I've had a heck of a fall season so far and I wish I could have saved a tag today. Oh well it's a first all the way around for me!
I called Richard and was talking to him about my luck and looked down and saw 6 toms strutting 200 yards away. Richard asked me to take the box and yelp and cut real hard. Those birds ran to me and got within 50 yards before they realized I was there

Fall hunting is such a pleasure for me and I see why Marlin, Richard and Morgan enjoy it so much. I'm one of those that enjoys the fall way more than the Spring! Richard, Morgan and Charlie have given me so much tips and tools on how to be a better fall hunter I have a ton of confidence in the woods now!
Today is what it is all about. Out smarting 20+ birds and beating them at their own game!

Now I have one bow tag left for birds and off to another farm I go to call one in
